The #UnitedStates federal government updated how it classifies people by #race & #ethnicity for the 1st time in over a quarter-century, aiming to better capture an increasingly #diverse country & give policymakers a fuller view of the #Americans their work impacts.
The #OMB will combine Qs about #race & #ethnicity on fed forms & encourage people to select multiple options if applicable. The govt also will add “#MiddleEastern or #NorthAfrican” (#MENA) a new category…which will include 7 choices.
“This is truly a momentous day” said Meeta Anand, snr dir for #census & data #equity at the Leadership Conference on Civil & #HumanRights, a natl coalition of >200 #CivilRights grps. The combined question, she added, is “one of the biggest changes we’ve ever seen.”
#CfP for "#Race & #Ethnicity in Popular #Culture" at #NEPCA 2024 (Northeast Popular Culture Association Annual Conference"), which will take place as a hybrid #conference on October 3-5, 2024.
An interesting paper on what you can find digging through the #archives of the ecclesiastic institutions. Especially seeing how the information on the #language spoken by a population/#ethnicity was not being gathered in the censuses of the time.
Anyone who thinks the answer to inherent bias in medical 'tools' is the increased/accelerated employment of AI in healthcare clearly has not been following the development of AI... not so much relieving the problem using AI more will likely compound it (for the same reasons the problem has developed in the first place).
Women are badly serviced by technologies shaped by men; a different approach is needed!
No-one will be surprised that the UK public have little faith in #political parties, but given the current travails & criminal activity in the #police, its notable how that doesn't seem to have dented whether people trust them as much as one might have expected (although this is last year's data); but I'd be interested to see that data broken down by #gender & by #ethnicity.
When #RishiSunak warns against 'mob rule' its pretty clear who the UK public at large think the mob actually is!
Some people may tell you that we live in a post-class society, but that's not what the data shows....
The Social Mobility Foundation has found a 12% pay gap in 2023 across a range of professions between those from #workingclass families & those whose families already worked in the professions.
This is then compounded by associated gaps driven by #gender and #ethnicity.
The only people living in a post-class society are those who want us not to talk about it!
Sex imbalance varied by ethnicity & influenced marital decisions & hhold composition at a time of rising ethnic intermarriage in early 20thC Hawaii, according to Sumner LaCroix & coauthors in a new Asia-Pacific Economic History Review paper. https://doi.org/10.1111/aehr.12280
"It appears that the New York Times manipulated a working-class Mizrahi family in the service of Israeli hasbara in order to score a journalistic achievement, which in reality is nothing more than a repetition of fake news and government propaganda."
In #financialservcies#class is a greater impediment to career progression than #ethnicity or #gender, but it does of course compound both those prejudices too... not least of all due to 'affinity bias' where boses promote those who are like themselves
In recent years, class has often been left off diversity agendas in favour of questions of #race & gender, but if we are seeking better diversity in finacial services (or anywhere else) class prejudice needs to be tackled
Having shaken off nationalism, Europe risks civilisationalism.
It is possible to be black and Dutch, or for a person of Moroccan descent to be unequivocally French. But is it possible to be non-white and to think of oneself as “European”?
Might eight decades of EU integration accidentally foment a form of ugly, pan-continental bigotry?
A new book decries the continent’s subtler form of chauvinism.
"#French riots show how entrenched #inequalities have become. The gulf between #immigrants and those born in the country is larger than in almost any other developed nation.
Imagine two countries. The first is proudly Christian, it allowed racial #segregation in living memory and #racism is mentioned more frequently in its media than anywhere else in the developed world. The second is strictly secular and legally prohibits the collection of #data on people’s race, a conscious effort by its leaders to avoid using #ethnicity to differentiate or divide.
Which do you think would offer people from diverse #racial and religious backgrounds the best prospects of success? Of becoming equal participants in society? The answers revealed in the data are surprising."
10 charts showing greater inequalities in #France compared to #UK, #Germany and sometimes #US.
Depicted chart : "Black and brown people are disproportionately likely to be stopped by police across the west, but the disparities are truly huge in France."
Chance of being stopped and searched by #police, relative to #white people in #London is ×2 or ×3 for #black people, compared to ×6 in #Paris and even more than ×7 for #arabs. https://www.ft.com/content/25eda9f0-8bd3-41e1-948c-89cc7c0ec66e
There is no such thing as "#white culture" or "the white #race" because #whiteness isn't a #culture or an #ethnicity. It's the opposite of those things. It exists specifically to destroy them. It was crafted, not born, in concert with #capitalism, to arbitrarily privilege some at the expense of others. 1/*
