Looks like iMessage won't be forced to integrate with third-parties in the EU but they'll still need to bring . Frankly I think its a great compromise.

If this gets released, it should work on too otherwise it's pointless. I'm tired of hearing users complaining about their struggles to share files (mostly images) to users - which often requires cos I guess you could send pics uncompressed there (easily).

I respect the EU tryna open up or whatever but can they tackle first since 's efforts to implement this has either been non-existent or shitty af. All I know is there should be an easy way for devices regardless of platforms to share files wirelessly, reliably.

Beeper users say Apple is now blocking their Macs from using iMessage entirely. This is likely the final nail in the coffin for what Beeper has been trying to accomplish.

This might come up if you switch between Android and iPhone "and aren't getting SMS/MMS messages"

Surprisingly, this happens. Enough so that Apple posted an official knowledge base article about it:

The presentation summarized the results of our long-term research into Operation Triangulation, conducted with our colleagues, Igor Kuznetsov, Valentin Pashkov, and Mikhail Vinogradov.

This presentation was also the first time we had publicly disclosed the details of all exploits and vulnerabilities that were used in the attack. We discover and analyze new exploits and attacks using these on a daily basis, and we have discovered and reported more than thirty in-the-wild zero-days in Adobe, Apple, Google, and Microsoft products, but this is definitely the most sophisticated attack chain we have ever seen."

During holidays, many might want to share photos.
If you send them by text/chat, does it matter which service you use?

To test, I've sent the same image different ways, and cropped it. The images in the blind test are:

Guess which is which, and the size (in %) compared to the original!

The last I’ll say on Beeper/Apple/iMessage debacle:

I think it’s within Beeper’s right to attempt at reverse engineering iMessage, but not Apple’s responsibility to be forced or even expected to host Beeper customers. It’s clear Apple doesn’t want to and I don’t blame them. If this ever went to court, Apple would obliterate Beeper—even if they switched lawyers. It’s not Beeper’s right to push the burden and expense of hosting on Apple.

I mean this was the inevitable outcome. I hate that my messaging is tied to specific platforms like Apple or Facebook. Tech savvy people like me can find some niche workaround but it will take government regulation to make that available to the masses.

Hello Fediversians, today I come to with some important information:

The Matrix to iMessage Bridge Beeper has been made Open Source:

:github: https://github.com/beeper/imessage

These people have legally reverse engineered Apple's proprietary iMessage Protocol, it's really awesome!

Just a few days ago the app was still a paid service, then they made it free of charge on December 14th, but now Apple :apple_inc: has deliberately changed their protocol in order to prevent any peasant non-Apple users like us to be able to use iMessage and interact with their precious walled-in users.

Naturally, Beeper now made all of their work and progress open source to continue the fight for a free and open interoperable network. Will you join them?

: "Last week, Beeper, a multiprotocol messaging company, released Beeper Mini, an alternative iMessage app reportedly based on the Pypush code that runs on Android, giving Android users the “blue bubble” that allows Apple customers to communicate securely with them. Beeper Mini stands out among earlier attempts at this by allowing users’ devices to directly communicate with Apple’s servers, rather than breaking end-to-end encryption by having messages decrypted and re-encrypted by servers in a data-center.

Beeper Mini is an example of “adversarial interoperability.” That’s when you make something new work with an existing product, without permission from the product’s creator."
