Can you imagine what the would look like now if the response to Gab had been "Admins don't need to block these instances, individual users can just choose whether or not to apply a user-level block (mute) themselves"?

And is even more corrosive than Gab. Gab users just posted a barrage of hate and unpleasantness. Meta is commercially incentivised to destroy what some people are inviting it to into.

#Meta losses from its namesake #Metaverse operations over the past few years accumulate to the debt of a small nation state.

Their vision is to not only mentally and socially lock us in to their platforms, but extend that to some kind of physical wall, a real walled garden.

(Given that, Metas definition of "open" is probably the opposite of mine…)

Meta lost $3.85 billion on the metaverse in the first quarter of 2024 alone. You know, that thing we all laughed about a couple years ago and next to no one actually uses.

It’s burned $45 billion on the metaverse since the end of 2020.

But why aren't we at least as worried about the U.S. billionaires who own the other apps stealing our data and trying to manipulate us?

@rbreich What they’re basically saying is you can steal and manipulate data from US citizens if the company is US owned.
This bill doesn’t even remotely get to the root of the mega-social-media problem.

It feels like @zuck is fucking with me. By rolling out federation, becomes THE place for journalists to leave for. So of course is doing everything possible to discourage conversation about the news there. It will never be the place for community without group functionality, and it won't serve influencers when people can avoid ads and algos but keep their social graph.

I remember folks in the web community shunning me when I first started speaking out against Big Tech – because I was criticising their friends who worked at Google, Facebook, etc. – saying I was exaggerating things.

I wonder what the same folks think now given what we know about these very same corporations; given a number of them are actively enabling a genocide.

Am I still an alarmist?

(I understand if some of you are too busy working at one or debating the minutiae of CSS syntax to reply.)
