This election should not be close. The Right has spent 50 yrs pushing a myth of a “liberal media,” when they’ve owned or controlled most presses for decades. We’re paying the price for our negligence in allowing that to happen. How do we fix systemic disorders of this scale?

I feel the same way about AI that I did about crypto when it started becoming a thing:

• All of the moral practices that make it possible are fucked beyond repair.

• It’s spawning some of the worst companies, and enriching some of the worst billionaires in the world.

• While there are some genuinely useful, practical applications for it, there are so few of them, and they have had so little positive impact so far, that it doesn’t even seem like it’s going to be worth it anytime soon.

Externalizing cost and risk is the hallmark of capitalism. Taking stuff at one cost (trees, oil, data, land, other peoples money, etc) then selling it for profit, is basically Econ101. The evil part is how egregiously the costs can be avoided, externalized, or as in the case of fossil fuels... delayed for a few generations...

should be much larger. The case for 27 seats is rational, but it should certainly be larger than nine.

I remember folks in the web community shunning me when I first started speaking out against Big Tech – because I was criticising their friends who worked at Google, Facebook, etc. – saying I was exaggerating things.

I wonder what the same folks think now given what we know about these very same corporations; given a number of them are actively enabling a genocide.

Am I still an alarmist?

A few years ago, Obama humiliated Trump at the White House Correspondents Dinner. People laughed AT Trump. He was publicly humiliated. His racist blood was boiling. Tonight, Jimmy Kimmel publicly humiliated Trump at the Oscar’s. The audience cheered when he said it was “past your jail time”. I wish more people would do that. It’s Trump’s weakness.

In bullying is a core principal.

Anytime anyone with a platform takes a moment to point out that the bully is a ridiculous - I think that is a good thing, as trivial and juvenile as it may be.

It is good for when people in high-visibility positions are willing to poke in the ego.

To be clear, was trying to bully Kimmel, but Jimmy wasnt having any.

An important blog post by @smadin

From the article:
“The surest way to immunize yourself against fascism’s insidious ability to work even well-meaning people around to accepting inhumanity by starting with the people they think are the ickiest, is to steadfastly and immovably refuse to find any people icky; to relentlessly search your heart for any shred of revulsion against your fellow humans, and incinerate it.”

I’m guilty. Not above admitting when I’m wrong, and I believe Scott is right. The most effective form of protest is satire. We must be mindful of the difference between satirising/ridiculing the human, from satirising/riduculing their deeds.

Most liberals see voting as a hiring decision - a mostly rational decision based on credentials, experience, and qualifications. The religious fundamentalist sees it as their duty in the on-going religious war.

Christian conservatives are well-organized, well-financed, diligent, and relentless.

They are also thoroughly conditioned to do as they are told, not ask questions, and fear opinions contrary to those of their leaders. As a result they make decisions based on ideology not reason.

chairgirlhands, to random

are we just going to keep debating "religion" with blanket statements or are we going to consider that it's useful to distinguish between "religion" when it functions as a personalized coping mechanism versus when it operates as an organized social entity.

are we going to really accept the framing that our two choices are "allow all cults" or "god is an illegal thought crime" or are we going to use these things called brains that we have in our skulls.

oldguycrusty,
@oldguycrusty@mastodon.world avatar

@chairgirlhands

I think humanity will be better served when all 'religion' is treated like we treat astrology, alchemy, or tarot cards; silly diversions, not serious means for making public, civil, or legislative policy.

Anyways, be careful is all I'm suggesting. It's better to tout the things that make our side's candidate better than either of them than it is to point out how you prefer one of the other side's candidates over the other one.

Yes, there are 4 Supreme Court justices who are totally fine with Texas making its own laws that go against federal government border sovereignty and also with drowning migrant kids fleeing horrible conditions.

I kind of doubt my followers need this reminder, but I’m writing it anyway. Presidents nominate Supreme Court justices. These 4 were picked by Republicans.

Would you give your phone’s password to your boss and let them examine your phone for hours without you in the room?

When you install the “MDM” (mobile device management) that your employer likely requires to access work email and other things, YOU ARE DOING EXACTLY THAT and hoping that your employer is trustworthy.

I realize not everyone gets a choice in this, but if you have one, take it. I personally have two phones: a work one and a personal one.

Yes. So much this. The way I see it - if a company/employer wants me to use a phone that they manage - they can provide one.

There's this awkward thing that happens to all musicians at some point. They get good enough that it becomes difficult to play anything at all.

As your skill increases, so do your standards. So everything you play feels mediocre. The weirdest part is that this "mediocre" performance is better than anything you were doing before. You've just moved the goalposts as you improved.

Wonderful thread.

Have wasted many joyous hours in numerous forgettable sometimes regrettable musical groups.

Terrible practice disciplines. Impostor syndrome and Dunning Kruger have dominated..

Bookshelves stuffed with method books. Some well worn.

The best thing I have ever read on the topic is "The Practice of Practice" by Jonathan Harnum.

Author describes three states of mind:

  • Unconscious incompentence.
  • Conscious incompetence.
  • Unconscious comptence.
oldguycrusty,
@oldguycrusty@mastodon.world avatar

@LadyDragonfly
For the older musician like myself who continues to enjoy the pursuit -I found many things in this book to be revelatory.

I often recommend this to musicians and especially to parents of young musicians.

This is not a method book. It speaks to the larger issues around psychology and mental aspects of learning.

Really great book.

It would be a totally different story if the 81 year old was bad at his job because of his age. In fact, I think his age has been a PLUS in a very complicated time. He's gotten A LOT of things done. I'm not on board with all his choices, but SO FUCKING WHAT. OVERALL, he's done very well. He's a BRIDGE to the future. The future WE HAVE TO CHANGE TOGETHER. So, save the bullshit, juvenile take that someone is only good if they do EVERYTHING YOU think is right in this moment in time.
