@stevenray I've still got a large collection of music files on a hard drive somewhere that I downloaded to use on my Classic iPod that died only a few years ago. Thought about buying one to replace it but with #Pandora (which is the music app that I use now, there really was no need to do that. 🤷♂️
This doesn't include my large collections of CDs & LPs that I still enjoy listening to on the mostly 1980's vintage audio gear that still works well.
im listening to Pandora for some morning music, per usual, to get me going. In the song “Ghost of my Hometown” by The Strike, when they’re playing the verse of a song, It reminds me if The Police! The singer, in particular, reminds me of Sting. Then, they sing the chorus and The Strike sound like themselves again
I'm also disheartened by #Spotify's continued #streaming dominance despite unfair compensation. I cringe every time I notice my #dance instructor cueing up playlists on the studio's music PC.
Yea, I'm not doing #Peertube, because without guard rails, people go all the way down rabbit holes. Basically, community guidelines keep the content from becoming to bizarre, too radical, and the isolation of federation makes it harder to spot people in #mentalhealth crisis.
The amount of single person instances in the #fediverse run by mentally ill, radical people is disturbing. I'll stick to my science videos on #Youtube and #horror#podcasts on #pandora.

I mean, I can think of several reasons, but too bad I'll do it anyway.
Knowing the leanings of the folks on this particular platform this is likely to spark some debate, but note that I'm not trying to paint YouTube as a saint - in fact, the first thing I want to talk about is a strategy they've taken which puts me and all YT creators in a weird place:

After all these years and recent new #handheldpc like the #ClockworkPi#DevTerm or #uConsole this litte embedded #Linux powered device is still the winner in comparison for me. Battery lasts more than twice as the other two, lighter, better to type on, faster in terms of real world usage b/c of bloated linux these days...

But... time spent isn't a perfect metric for happiness, and there is another option: 3) Algorithmic feed where the user has more control of the algorithm and objective function.
right! and if there's an algorithm curating my feed, i should be able to edit and tweak it, similar to how #pandora let's me fine tune my 'stations' (only with even more options)
@omgubuntu I'd love to say I mostly stream locally from my jellyfin server, but in reality I listen to a lot more #Pandora streaming through my phone in my car than anything else. Yes, Pandora, is still a thing.
