#News#Media#Journalism#DigitalMedia#SocialMedia#Participation: "Digital media are often praised for having offered new ways to participate with news. But how has participation with news changed in recent years? A pre-registered analysis of survey data from 2015 to 2022 in 46 countries (N = 577,859) shows that participation with news has declined. This decrease is observed in most countries and for most forms of participation, including liking, sharing, commenting on news on social media and talking about the news offline. The only form of participation that has increased is news sharing via private messaging apps. Overall, participation with news was higher among younger people, the university-educated, those with high interest in news and those with low trust in news. Over time, participation has declined more for those with lower trust in news, those without a bachelor’s degree and for women. Within countries, increases in political polarization were associated with lower participation."
"Innovative Citizen Participation
explores the innovative ways that governments can effectively engage with citizens and stakeholders to source ideas, co-create solutions, and tackle complex policy"
"A Citizens’ Assembly
is a group of people selected by lottery who are broadly representative of a community. They spend significant time learning and collaborating through facilitated deliberation to find common ground and form collective recommendations for policy makers, decision makers, and the community."
"The Assembling an Assembly Guide is a resource for any institution, organisation, city administration, or policy maker interested in running a Citizens’ Assembly. It is also a useful tool for citizens and activists wishing to learn more about what a Citizens’ Assembly is and how it works, in order to strengthen their advocacy efforts."
"Prepared by DemocracyNext, a non-profit, non-partisan research and action institute founded by the people who developed the OECD Deliberative Democracy Toolbox, it embeds the OECD Good Practice Principles of running a high-quality Assembly." https://assemblyguide.demnext.org/
Today at the #demonstration in #Berlin for #democracy, someone also spoke in favour of the group of #disabled people, and why it is so important to have #access to all areas of society in order to be able to fight for your own rights, in case nobody else does. This made me realise once again why #Alttext is so important: every access to information, no matter how small, enables democratic #participation. A small thing with a big impact.
#AI#Participation#Publics: "Given the importance of public engagement in governments’ adoption of artificial intelligence systems, artificial intelligence researchers and practitioners spend little time reflecting on who those publics are. Classifying publics affects assumptions and affordances attributed to the publics’ ability to contribute to policy or knowledge production. Further complicating definitions are the publics’ role in artificial intelligence production and optimization. Our structured analysis of the corpus used a mixed method, where algorithmic generation of search terms allowed us to examine approximately 2500 articles and provided the foundation to conduct an extensive systematic literature review of approximately 100 documents. Results show the multiplicity of ways publics are framed, by examining and revealing the different semantic nuances, affordances, political and expertise lenses, and, finally, a lack of definitions. We conclude that categorizing publics represents an act of power, politics, and truth-seeking in artificial intelligence."
We are posting here the messages from organizations, institutions, NGOs, etc. that have opened a channel on Mastodon and left #X/Twitter. Many of their arguments cite the same points as mentioned in our open letter calling the universities to become active on Mastodon and fediverse servers.
The messages represent a broad consensus among Internet users who want to bring the choice of social media in line with their mission statements. The first of these is the data protection foundation @DS_Stiftung.
It writes about itself: „Acting independently in the field of #DataPrivacy, Stiftung Datenschutz links politics and the public, academics and business. It complements existing organizations and initiatives while liaising closely with German data protection authorities on state and federal levels.“ https://stiftungdatenschutz.org/english
At the end of September, she drew the consequences and broke away from X/ #Twitter https://twitter.com/DS_Stiftung/status/1704059550335119522
A logical and responsible decision @wikimediaDE !
But not only that: since last week we also welcome @wikimediaDE to the group of supporting organizations of our action alliance.
Welcome @wikimediaDE !
We look forward to working with you to encourage the #universities for a better internet.
How does #democracy, #inclusion and #participation relate to the #resilience of our society to #collapse? 🌋 The research I reviewed shows that all those factors are important to have a stable society during catastrophic events. However, they only work if you also have the #StateCapacity to implement the interventions needed.

In his latest post, @pluralistic writes about studying the practice of democratic decision-making in the same ways Elinor Ostrom scientifically studied what makes a successful commons work.
This field is called Analytical Democratic Theory. I've been working on another side of this: how do we make genuine and meaningful invitations to people to participate in managing the problems that affect them?
Our work is place-based and #Ireland is our home, so @mastodonie seemed the natural place for us on here
We seek to pay attention to the #marginalised voices that complicate and enrichen the story of this island. So we're keen to diversify our emerging #mastodon#community
We're grateful for any #reboost that helps connect us with others striving for an equitable society
