Spring reminder for gardening types: this is where peat moss comes from. This was a biodiverse bog before it was drained (note the ditch around it) and the vegetation cleared in order to 'harvest' the peat.

"Right-wing politicians have launched a bid to block the passing of the ’s flagship nature protection law, which scientists have described as a “cornerstone of food security and human health”.

Derailing the law could come at significant cost to farmers, who are facing increasingly uncertain conditions due to climate and loss."

Another day ,another wind farm application, this time for the opposite side of the local salmon river to the application put on a couple of years back that was turned down for environmental reasons ,It looks like the one planned on peatlands has been turned down and our ancient monuments, bats eagles and other wildlife there are safe. Its like being under siege, hopefully we will get the UNESCO status soon

Hello everybody, I have a funny plant for you which I've never seen before. It's called dense cotton-grass (Moorwollgras in German), and I've found it today in the moors of Carrowkeel megalithic cemetery, Sligo. My friend, who walked with me called it granny haircut. I love the fluffiness of this little windswept thing. Nature is amazing!

One of the things that has made me a devoted fan of (BBC and BritBox) is their dedication to getting gardeners off of peat as a growing medium. This week's show mentioning the upcoming ban on peat in English compost wasn't, I'm sure, meant as a victory lap, but they deserve one. They've done a lot to move that needle.

Companies, states, and the U.S. in general should be moving faster in this direction. No one needs to grow in peat.
