I sometimes thought my father thought he could't die while he still had books on his pending pile (a stab at immortality I seem to be replicating)... so, it was strangely touching to see Tom Gauld has had similar thoughts.

#books #reading Earlier, I began reading "Mind Games" by Nora Roberts. It promises to be an excellent read.

Book description: The #1 New York Times-bestselling author of Identity presents a suspenseful new novel of tragedy and trauma, love and family, and the evil that awaits. As they do each June, the Foxes have driven the winding roads of Appalachia to drop off their children for a two-week stay at their grandmother’s. Here, twelve-year-old Thea can run free and breathe in the smells of pine and fresh bread and Grammie’s handmade candles. But as her parents head back to suburban Virginia, they have no idea they’re about to cross paths with a ticking time bomb. Back in Kentucky, Thea and her grandmother Lucy both awaken from the same nightmare. And though the two have never discussed the special kind of sight they share, they know as soon as their tearful eyes meet that something terrible has happened. The kids will be staying with Grammie now in Redbud Hollow, and thanks to Thea’s vision, their parents’ killer will spend his life in supermax. Over time, Thea will make friends, build a career, find love. But that ability to see into minds and souls still lurks within her, and though Grammie calls it a gift, it feels more like a curse―because the inmate who shattered her childhood has the same ability. Thea can hear his twisted thoughts and witness his evil acts from miles away. He knows it, and hungers for vengeance. A long, silent battle will be waged between them―and eventually bring them face to face, and head to head…

I’m nearing the end of a book & it’s one of those instances where I’m simply not ready to say goodbye to the complex set of characters I’ve come to know.

Oh well. I suppose that’s a sign of great storytelling. 📚

What's better for the environment: A paper book, or an e-reader? NPR spoke to industry experts about the rise of digital reading, how the publishing industry is reducing waste, and whether using a fossil-fuel-derived plastic e-reader is a better option than a paper book. The short answer, according to professor Mike Berners-Lee (yes, he is Tim's brother): It depends.

Just finished reading my first spy novel in ages. Felt like one and oh my goodness it was great! Gave it 4,5 stars as the story is a bit slow in certain parts ( that's in part a pro too in others )

The book is called A Spy Alone by Charles Beaumont and I highly recommend it.

I still read a lot of "paper" books and take A LOT of notes which often slows me down. My process is to transcribe from the book, there has to be a better way.

Does anyone have any apps that are very streamlined for taking notes while reading on paper & automatic appending to a note?

Update: Actually, Highlighted is exactly that. Capture OCR highlights from books, export a TXT/Markdown/CSV…

Thank you @damirstuhec so much for building Highlighted 🙌🙏

Started watching the videos of a booktuber. What I like about her is that instead of roasting and hating books, she mostly presents books which she loves.
And I really appreciate this approach.

However, it seems we have a different book taste. I read a novel she recommended, but to me the pacing was too slow. She also loves a classic novel which I didn't finish, because most of the characters are horrible people.

I feel a bit stuck in my reading. The cosy mysteries and fantasies are becoming a bit boring. (Just read a few to many one after another) But my brain is unwilling to process harder SFF or litfic. Nothing on my tbr really appeals. Anyone have ideas for genres I could try? @bookstodonmy @boeken #bookstodon #books #reading

I finished The Hands of the Emperor by Victoria Goddard. I've seen complaints that MC is a bit too perfect, and I can see why that could be said. But... holy cow was it nice to read about someone competent not making stupidly bad choices. The relationships between the characters were so enjoyable. I would have liked having many of them as friends.

Slow paced with a lot of dialogue, I'm almost surprised I enjoyed this book as much as I did. Politics and deep friendships carry it well

My weekend reading in between all the getting stuff done will be a lovely re-read of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

Heaven knows I’ve seen every possible movie adaptation of this, since I’m a huge classic horror fan .

But it’s been decades since I’ve read the book!

I recently got a Barnes & Noble gift certificate for Mother’s Day from my son, so I bought myself some classics that I had wanted to have in my collection 📚🤎.
