Thought I'd start a thread for the books I read during this year, to keep track and share what I've been spending my time with. Happy for recommendations along the way, but do already have a decent-sized to be read pile (and ebook library). #books #reading #bookstodon

At the risk of reigniting a debate that has been had in my timeline in the past... here's a report of a University of Valencia that looked at over 20 paper examine the differential effects of reading digitally & on paper.

The research confirms my experience (my own & in the reading of my erstwhile students) that reading digitally is less likely to lead to long-term educational (knowledge) benefits...

I sometimes thought my father thought he could't die while he still had books on his pending pile (a stab at immortality I seem to be replicating)... so, it was strangely touching to see Tom Gauld has had similar thoughts.

Aliette de Bodard. The Red Scholar's wake.

Space opera and factional politics swirl around the growing romance between a pirate ship mind and one of her captives.

I've been reading a lot of f/f fiction recently for some reason.

Huh. It just occurred to me that not everyone reads all the time. Like, there’s a bunch of people without books they’re reading right now. That concept is so bizarre to me. I’ve always got several books going. Ebooks, audiobooks and physical copies of books. If you don’t read anymore, when and why did you stop? No judgement. I’m genuinely curious. @bookstodon

That is a surprising figure. I'm so glad I have the reading habit, it's among the most affordable culture - and highly rewarding.

Here's the article that the snippet is from, about a survey of Australia's culture habits: https://www.theage.com.au/culture/art-and-design/australians-are-reading-less-and-staying-in-more-what-s-behind-the-culture-shift-20230913-p5e495.html

How is affecting the cost of . Books in is gonna get a hella more expensive, or maybe the bookstores - the tiny amount we have left - will be left getting books from the US. It's sad we don't print our own books but I suspect the business isn't as profitable here as are apparently not great English book readers. The Malay book market, however, is thriving.

, anyone? Perfect example from publishing. A publisher is using AI to write crappy nonfiction, then assigning author names that almost match leading experts in that field (to trick search engines). No doubt other AIs will now search those texts as authoritative. This is done solely to make money and only makes the world a worse place.

📖 Currently reading: A Psalm for the Wild-Built

I say "currently reading"... I made it a whole 1.5 chapters in before I just couldn't hold back the tears.

Part of me just wants to DEVOUR this book, it's short, I could have read it all last night, easily. The other part wants to savor... take it slow, thoroughly experience every moment.

Idk which side's gonna win. But in the end I'll have read it and then I really will be the winner.
