#Greetings from a train to Joensuu. I'm on my way to my #home village Simpele. The purpose is to put Christmas curtains into my #mother's kitchen and some #Christmas lights in her living room. I will also go to see my #father in the nursing home. #alzheimerssucks. 🫶 Tomorrow I will heat my mother a #sauna. I will travel back home on Sunday and my #cats Sanni and Siiri will come home on Monday. What are your plans for this #weekend?! 🫶🤗
This might be my most Finnish post yet. I want to tell you about something we absolutely love and are crazy about. Sauna.
Did you know there are about 3 million saunas in Finland? (The current population of Finland is 5,5 million). The last 5 of the 6 apartments I’ve lived in have had saunas in them and the one that did not, it had a sauna space you could go twice per week.
Sauna is something insanely calming and meditative. For us Finns sauna is not that spa-like ”steam room” they have in other countries, it’s all wood, rather small and hot, during summer we use birch leaves to whip each other with, we use tar as a herb and we just sit quietly in near 100 degrees Celsius (212 Fahrenheit). It’s supposed to be so hot you want to go out after ten minutes, breathe and relax. In the seventh floor I don’t have an icy lake but if I would I’d go right in, and then back to sauna… Sauna is not only to be enjoyed in the cottages, it can be enjoyed anywhere, any time, any way. It is a state of mind.
I love having sauna in my apartment. It is something otherworldly. It’s a luxury that I have without being a millionaire. It’s something that warms me during the winters and cools me down during the summers. Sauna is something I, like many other Finns, cherish and love. It stops time. It’s literally epic.
Sauna reminds me about the fact we are all human. We go there naked without thinking about it. Sauna cleanses the soul.
I wish everyone would have access to sauna multiple times per week like I do.

Last night the bed collapsed under me. Fortunately, my godfather was able to fix it #today but I hardly slept for two or three hours last night. 🙈 Today I baked traditional #Christmas tarts. I have a #sauna in my block of flats. Today is a traditional sauna day in #Finland so I also heated my sauna. I don't heat it often these days. I enjoyed bathing in the sauna very much #today. Sauna heals everything. In Finland we say that "If sauna, tar and booze don't help, then you're doomed to death." 🙄🤔 #suomimastodon
My friend's #cedar barrel #sauna that I used last night. Fired it up again, for a pre-dawn spa session. I'm following sauna time up with lying down on an electric shiatsu massage therapy body mat. They'll help me body release tension & feel better.
My loose tooth infection subsided a lot & it will come out pretty easy with dentist appointment tomorrow👍
It's #sauna day! 😍 I finally carried all the extra stuff out of my sauna. I had to put things there due to the renovation work. I had no room in any other place so the sauna was my storage room. Before giving up for today, I took apart the sauna and shifted a bunch of rocks to expose the crack in the hot water pipe. It's going to be a pain in the ass to weld there, the crack is in a tight corner and of course on the bottom.
Access is limited, there's a wall on two sides and I'll have to bend myself in there. Maybe I can remove the wire mesh for better access, but probably I'll have to take out all the rocks then. Argh.
Jag hade missat det stora bastubråket, men något förvånad blir man när Alex Schulman skriver att han badar bastu 320 dagar per år. Hur får han ihop det? Badar man sex dagar i veckan blir det typ 312 gånger per år, så det måste vara något mer komplicerat system.

Oavsett vilket så är det någon sorts bastuextremism. Själv badar jag bara 104 gånger per år. På ett ungefär alltså.
Coming back since not posting for a few days. I had the pleasure of visiting #Finland last week and jump into a #frozenlake after a #sauna. This #photography resumes the beauty of it.
Heute steht eine #Sauna vor dem Bundestag und das ist fantastisch. 🏳️⚧️ #Selbstbestimmung selbst gemacht räumt mit Vorurteilen gegenüber trans Personen auf und kämpft für ein #Selbstbestimmungsgesetz, das den Namen verdient.
We had our #sauna renovated and the outcome is gorgeous. The previous one was poorly built and leaked moisture. Now it's properly sealed and has this dark wood almost smoke sauna-esque aesthetic.
We still need to insert the stones into the stove, clean up the wood dust, and oil treat the seats. Can't wait to heat it up proper!
We saved money by not redoing the tile floor, which was in good shape anyway. Without that it was surprisingly affordable. We'll probably paint the tile floor later to make it look new. :)
