While I was spinning and plying I was convinced this would turn out fantastically ugly, but on the skeinwinder it doesn't look so bad. Maybe it's the lighting.
Fly fact of the day: Some adult flies produce silk.
Silk is a very common protein fiber to produce, shared by a lot of arthropods, so I'm not so surprised when I learn of another insect that can produce it.
But still, it's pretty cool.
Some male flies in family Empidae wrap gifts for females in silk produced in their legs.

Yesterday I was very creative at our demonstration table in the museum: my first collage that isn't just paper & paint. There was no audience (people probably used the rare sunshine for outdoor events), but we had fun! Now some small embroidery in gold to finish it. I haven't tied flies in hand for a couple of months. I caught a juvenile spotted bass with one of these on the Ocmulgee River yesterday. It was the only fish that I caught, and I caught it before my first cast! The fly was drifting in the water while I was peeling line off of the reel.
The silk thread came from a lot of vintage silk on eBay.
