What are your earliest musical memories, or the first records you bought?

My earliest musical memories are of listening to my grandparents’ records. They included:

45rpm Danny Williams - Moon River
78rpm Sheb Wooley - The Purple People Eater
33rpm Winifred Atwell - Double Seven: Seven Rags Seven Boogies

I also loved the record labels, particularly the HMV labels.

1950s/1960s Favourite Record Chart

A generalisation - at the moment, songs from the second half of the 1960s are doing better than songs from the early 1960s and 1950s. Is there a reason for this - do you have a theory?

Remembering Don Cornelius

https://www.didiermary.fr/remembering-don-cornelius-soul-train/

Watch the documentary below, as it’s really worth the time you’ll spend on the Soul Train phenomenon and the story of this “Godfather” of black music, Donald Cortez “Don” Cornelius (Sept 27 1936 – Feb 1, 2012). Soul Train was one of the most important trend setters in pop music and dance during its run […] …

Looking at the results of the music polls we’ve been running, and thinking about Elvis Presley. Does he remain an icon of twentieth century popular music, or has his reputation faded? What are your thoughts?

I cannot tell you how many copies of "The Best of Sam Cooke" I wore out. It still stands tall in my rotation.

Sam Cooke was born today (January 22) in 1931. He wrote so many great songs. I'd hear them on the radio growing up, and I still love hearing them. I was close to posting 'You Send Me' because that's my favorite love song of his, but had to go with Chain Gang, which is of course the catchiest, poppiest song about prison workers you'll ever hear.
