Being means hating on the because they seem so arrogant and at the same time admiring the because they are even more arrogant.

We are a strange kind of mountain people.

This week in

If you are into languages, you are probably familiar with those conversations with your multilingual friends: you take arbitrary elements from the languages you both speak, and randomly squeeze them together into sentences.

That is any regular Monday for the Swiss. Schwyzdüütsch, a.k.a. German is a colorful amalgamation of German, French and Italian.

Swiss climate activists block vehicles near Gotthard tunnel

Renovate Switzerland denounced the “betrayal” and “abandonment” of climate protection policies. In a petition that it is inviting people to sign, the group is calling on the Swiss government to ban the sale of new cars powered by fossil fuels from 2025 and to invest “massively” in non-polluting forms of mobility and public transport

Did you know that was once known as ' Disease'?

The word was first mentioned in 1651 & described as an in 1688.

In 1710, it was claimed that music of Swiss herdsmen & the Guggisberglied (a song), led Swiss soldiers to desert. The singing of the same resulted (allegedly) in capital .

@pluralistic finally hits the nail on the head with an explanation that can be expanded to Elon Musk worshippers.
It answers the question why so many people defend despite running a massive con. With his robotic death machines that cause inextinguishable fires, charged easing diesel generators despite also claiming carbon offset credits for that same energy.

Excerpt:
"This produces a powerful cognitive dissonance: "If all the 'entrepreneurs' I worship are just laying traps for the unwary, and if I am sometimes unwary, then I'm cheering on the authors of my future enduring misery." The only way to resolve this dissonance – short of re-evaluating your view of platform capitalism or questioning your own immunity to scams – is to blame the victim."

@pluralistic

Good talk about the implications of the Swiss Cheese model of security.
The model's attributable to James Reason who also did foundational work categorizing human error. The really central part of his Slips, Trips, and Lapses is that everyone has bad days and different parts of your system fail you; it's very rarely carelessness. Error's scale and traceability vary, too.
If what we depend on is someone never making a mistake, I have bad news for you 😬.
