Good morning everyone, happy Saturday! I'm enjoying the weekend so far and hope you are too. I was in the backyard and got a great picture of a pecker to share, a red bellied woodpecker that is. He was teasing me all morning, so I got my camera out.

Have a wonderful day! We're going to do our errands and maybe the MO Botanical Garden.

A quartet of seen on a recent stop of our ongoing , at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument near Ajo, Arizona. The Sonoran Desert is dry, vast, and surprisingly full of life!

It was a beautiful sunny day, but cold. Tonight the temperature will fall to 26F/-4C. Luckily, no snow is in the forecast. Just the usual suspects at the feeders today.

This male black and white downy woodpecker is on the alert. He probably saw another male approaching.
The big flock of bluebirds has dispersed. 1 or 2 male bluebirds have staked out territory around the feeders and are chasing all the others away. Here, a single male bluebird has claimed the mealworm feeder as his.

I haven't seen any migrants at the feeders. The flock of American goldfinches in our yard sing all day. The males are molting into their summer feathers. The females are not as brightly colored, but I think this very pale goldfinch may be leucistic. The downy woodpeckers are chasing each other around the yard and the house finches are numerous and colorful. #birds #birding #birdsofmastodon #birdphotography #nature #HoosierMast #goldfinches #woodpecker #housefinch #leucism

When I first saw this bird, I thought it was just a pale female American goldfinch. But now I think this bird may be leucistic. That is condition which is marked by overall pale color or patches of reduced coloring caused by a genetic mutation.
This little black and white beauty is one of the several female downy woodpeckers in our yard.
We have a small flock of house finches in the yard. This guy is a male house finch and he has a red cap and brown and beige feathers.

The bluebirds continue to make up the majority of the birds at the feeder. I believe the male red bellied woodpecker has finished pecking out a nesting cavity, as I haven't seen him working at it lately. Meanwhile, the female is dining at the feeder a lot. The weather continues to oscillate between numbing cold and heat appropriate to early summer.

The snow is melting, but life remains difficult so the birds and the deer dropped by for food and water.

The male red bellied was at it again today, excavating the same hole in a tree.

We have several red bellied woodpeckers at our feeders, but I have never found their nesting spots. Today, I was on our deck, scanning the nearby trees, when I saw a red belly enlarging a big hole in a nearby tree. Perhaps I will be able to watch baby woodpeckers from my deck this spring!
