The wilderness is where i feel most at home. Far northern California is my home hiking/backpacking turf. Watershed restoration, salmon habit, CA native plants, are passions. Advocate peaceful solutions for living with bears, and other wildlife as neighbors , ( = human behavior modification)
Play fiddle, Irish, French Canadian, Brazilian Choro music.
I hike with cats,
Kind of a backpacking gear junkie

I frequently come across a naive attitude toward invasive plants. "Nature knows what she's doing, survival of the fittest etc."
It's not like that. Plants evolve in communities over millennia. Plant communities evolve with insect , and animal communities, and balance is what keeps everything thriving.
Plant communities are like the bacteria communities in our digestive tracks. If Giardia, Ecoli, candida etc were to take over, it wreaks havoc with the whole body. They start colonizing the digestive track and overwhelming the system. It's hard to function. If the balance isn't restored, you may feel chronically ill, you feel like a shadow of your former self. You might even die.
The exact same thing happens to a meadow when a fast moving invasive grass, like Avena Fatua gets introduced.

Good.

But as I've said before, roid rage isn't a real thing. It's not.

I've never taken steroids. I don't need them. But a lot of people I train with do take steroids and other PEDs.

Angry violent little men want to commit violence, but can't shake anything at a buck fifty. So they take steroids.

@mekkaokereke
I'm not sure about that. I have a friend that was put on steroids for a genetic lung ailment. He's by nature a calm, chill individual, but he hated being on the steroids because of distressing side effects. He said the worst was dramatic personality changes that made him feel angry all the time

My small rural far Northern California town is searching for a veterinarian......thriving established business opportunity
Our local veterinarian is retiring in March. They are the only walk in, no appointment needed, vet in the county. The next closest vet is 60 miles away. They've advertised for seven years, for someone to take over the thriving business. No luck.

It's very rewarding to see what these native plants bring to our gardens. My garden at this time is 60% native. Will be 100% native in the next 2–3 years. Cardinal Flower-Humming bird magnet and Great Blue Lobelia from last summer.

Following the 4 dam removals on the Klamath river, and restoration plan closely. Local tribes collected a phenomenal 19 BILLION local ca native plant seeds from 98 species to revegetate the project. Our local tribes do stuff in a well thought out, big way, reintroduction of endangered species like condors, reintroduction of cultural fire, instrumental in getting the dams removed, + collecting 19 billion native seeds to reveg the project. Continual source of inspiration.

In the grand scheme of things, this isn't that important. But why didn't anyone tell me earlier that you can make absolutely perfect, amazing mayonnaise with an immersion blender and a jar in 30 sec?!!

I have chickens, and I live literally across the street from hundreds of acres of canola*, I don't think I'll ever buy mayonnaise again.

*(I don't have any way to buy oil from across the street, and I see how much stuff they spray on so I don't want it, but local oilseed crops do exist)

Coho,
@Coho@mountains.social avatar

@sundogplanets
A friend of mine has his own oil press, he uses it mostly for making flaxseed oil. Its small and can be mounted on a kitchen counter. I know people with olive oil presses too. Not that many decades ago people had home oil presses.

Coho,
@Coho@mountains.social avatar

@sundogplanets
I just googled oil pressing machines. There's a lot of options. Turns out making homemade oil is popular in India, where oil presses are as common as blenders are here.

One of the first issues I had with Mastodon: the people who want you to put warnings on posts about politics.

No, sorry, I’m not going to do that, ever. If you want to ignore what’s going on in America right now, that’s your responsibility, not mine.

Coho,

I feel the same about postings of fellow sentient beings we share the planet with. I refuse to warn, hide and mark as sensitive, snakes, lizards, slugs, leeches, worms, spiders, bacteria, odd ocean dwellers, and insects who make up the majority of biomass on earth.
