I just binged on Silo, the Apple TV series, and it's so hooking. Kind of a fresh take on dystopia. Now I want to read the books, they are by Hugh Howey, and I wonder if they are worth a read? Anyone got an insight?

I used to follow Hugh Howey on Twitter. I wonder if he's active on another platform.

Shout out to @automattic, the folks behind , etc., for providing great customer service.

I've been making modifications to profkeithdevlin.org and my 90s era expertise with unix, html, etc. is hopeless in the css world (which I guess is the online media equivalent to my beloved, but now rusty, LaTeX).

now struggle with the stuff they helped create ☹️

Enema_Cowboy,
@Enema_Cowboy@dotnet.social avatar

@Well_Worth_A_Read @Jennifer @bookstodon @horrorbooks

  1. Digital Fortress by Dan Brown. The writing was not credible and clearly wasn't vetted by anyone with a background in digital security.

  2. Anathem by Neal Stephenson. I have a love/hate relationship with Stephenson. He writes beautiful prose and has some cool ideas, but he diverges on far too many tangents.

  3. Streets of Laredo by Larry McMurtry. McMurtry stuck his finger clearly in the eye of Lonesome Dove fans in chapter 2.

The worst book in that I've read in that regard is The Enemy, by Lee Child. I was in the Army around the time that book was set in, and I've spent more time at Fort Irwin than I would have liked. Too bad there aren't any soldiers with which he could have consulted.

In the late 80s ‘concern’ about childhood obesity caused complaints about fast food advertisements directed at children. Happy Meals if ordered without modifications contained more calories than was recommended for a meal for a child under 12. This is why Wendy’s McDonalds and other have “apple slices” — if you replace the fries in a kids meal with apples the meal comes just under the limit. The funny thing is i love fast food apple slices they are my guilty pleasure. 1/

I can't watch one more boomer in a MAGA hat telling a journalist "We're taking our country back!"

It was never just your country. A lot of people from many places worked to make better futures here. A lot of them weren't allowed a choice or the benefit of their efforts.

How about you sit down, shut up, share your toys and play nice in the sandbox for awhile?

The electoral college is the original sin against the idea of the people governing ourselves. It opened the door to these greater perversions of the system. I’ve heard moderate and even “left-leaning” people defend the idea that systems like the Senate, districting and the EC are fair because “otherwise big cities and states would dominate too much” but who decides what is too much?

Why is my south bronx vote less important? Why is that good or fair? it’s BS. (And don’t get me started on DC. )

    "The diplomatic origins, so-called, of the War are only the fever chart of the patient; they do not tell us what caused the fever. To probe for underlying causes and deeper forces one must operate within the framework of a whole society and try to discover what moved the people in it."
