Over and over we’ve been told self-driving cars would solve our transport problems only for them not to deliver.

There aren't even autonomous freight trains in the US, which is a far simpler case than self-driving cars.

While federal regulations require a certain crew size, this is a good thing. It's good because the command and control infrastructure won't support it.

@HeavenlyPossum I once had a job where they got real big mad if you didn't punch out for lunch even if you were forced to through lunch.

Now that I am an "exempt" employee that's not a worry, although certain managers have a tendency to schedule a meeting over lunch, because "that's the only time I am / a conference room is available. It's been over 20 years that the manager would provided lunch. 1/2

Most low-end digital calipers are made by the same Chinese maker under dozens of brands. ALL have a funky battery cover that makes them lose juice. For 5 years I’ve been pushing the battery up. The solution was to force it down. Worked like a charm on all 3 of mine.

Because Madoff stole from mostly rich, mostly white people, ultra high net worth individuals, financial institutions. US society makes sure that rich folk are made whole, have loans forgiven (Eg PPP), etc.

But the people that SBF stole from are unlikely to ever get their money back. Because they were disproportionately Black, low net worth individuals. AKA, normal people.

@dworkin The CEO of the last company I worked for took six months off to hike the Pacific Coast Trail. This is in stark contrast to my having to cancel a volunteer commitment I had made six months in advance because of "business needs".
