Gemini. Hockey mom. Wife (not yours). Naturally medicated. Fiber artist. Lover of most music. Romance audiobook fan. A little witchy. Brainfog aficionado. New Englander (US). Horrible chef, excellent baker. Mathphobe (shut up, it's a thing.) Migrainer. Meditator. Awkward, but cute. Chronically ill #POTS. Yankees fan, but not an asshole about it. Warning: Rant
My husband and I are both left-handed.

There are approximately 708 million left-handers in the world.

Over 9% of people are left-handed.

Apparently these numbers do not meet the threshold for inclusion in product design.

My former Mr. Coffee coffeemaker had ambidextrous functionality. The flap over the water reservoir opened to the back, allowing someone to pour water easily from either side.

My new Mr. Coffee coffeemaker includes a design change. The flap over the water reservoir opens to the left, making it almost impossible for me pour water into it.

I just bought a new electric water kettle. The first time I filled it with water, I guessed at the fill limit because I saw no markings inside.

Then I read the instruction manual that referenced the maximum fill line. What? Turns out, I can only see the fill line markings if I fill the kettle while holding it in my right hand. 🤦‍♀️

If you are a product designer, you commit design malpractice if you fail to acknowledge the existence of left-handers.

End rant.

A black electric water kettle on a kitchen counter. The handle is oriented to the right and the pour spout is on the left. The lid is flipped up. On the inside, stamped into the stainless steel, two fill line markers are visible.

@Aviva_Gary Yes. There's some that you can comfortably hold in each hand so technically they're ambidextrous. But the issue is, they're technically still right handed because when you hold them in your left hand you can't see where you're cutting. In order to see where you're cutting the blades need to be on the opposite side. That's what makes a left handed scissor truly left handed. (I hope this makes sense.)

Anyone want to share their opinions on #SewingMachines? I may be interested in buying a new one. I have a 20 yr old Janome that is so loud I can't use it when anyone is home because they complain. It's also cranky & I could never get it to make good stitches consistently. I want to make my own clothing & since this is probably a passing fancy, I'd like to not pay an arm & a leg for it. (Maybe a second hand deal?) I don't mind an older machine and I don't want anything computer-y. #craft #sewing

I turn 50 in May & I want to do something adventurous. For my 30th Husband & I went to Vegas. I ate chocolate for every meal & we went sky diving. 40th Husband & I went to Ashville, NC & hiked Mount Mitchell.

What should I do this year? 🤔

Next year in June I'm going to have people I want to make holiday gifts for fill out a questionnaire including questions like:

What's your favorite color?
Are you allergic to any fibers?
Is there anything you want handmade that you know you'll use?
Is there sizing information you'd like to include?
Would you be offended if I'm late with gift giving?
If you want baked goods, do you have allergies?

For whatever reason the brainfog that I typically deal with on a daily basis has noticably improved. It makes my job flipping through multiple spreadsheets 100 times easier and faster. For example- imagine having to do something as simple as copy & pasting information from one sheet to another but you have 4 sheets open & your brain suddenly drops what you were attempting to do from memory. This is what brainfog does to me constantly. And I've dealt with it for years.

I can tell Husband is feeling better because he's getting handsy. Don't worry, I still smack his hand and yell "COOTIES" when he tries it. I'll be more welcoming when he tests negative.

Would it be awkward to send the hotel we stayed at in Placid a thank you card? They really went above & beyond. We had to cancel 2 rooms for 3 nights on zero notice & they let us without penalty. Staff members drove me to & from the ER when Husband was there, one of them offered- completely heartfelt- to drive me to the other ER 20 minutes away when he was transferred, then to arrange a ride for us back to the hotel. It would have added 40 minutes to her commute home. Thank you isn't enough.

My birthday gift from Husband & the kids is a new HP laptop. I haven't had a real computer other than my phone for 5+yrs. I need a laptop for school. I've been using it all weekend. My major complaint - you can't adjust the font color and the font color currently in use is too light. I need black. It's a light blue. It makes it really hard to see anything in screen. I can't do dark mode, that gives me headaches.

How do i fix this?

My pharmacy wouldn't refill my nortriptyline & told me to call the prescribing doc. Nortriptyline is an antidepressant but I take it to control nerve pain associated with . Without it, I get painful sensation in my toes & fingers & tightness in my neck & shoulders but with it I rarely have those issues.

So I call my cardiologist's office yesterday & today I get a return call. They won't fill the script since they're a cardiologist office not a psychiatrist. I argued that I see the

Remember in late Dec when my cardiologist's office refused to refill an antidepressant script because it wasn't a cardiac drug? They gave me a 90 day refill but said that was the last time they'd do it. (Scroll back.)

Well, guess what I'm running out of? Yup. The antidepressant. So, I called & explained it all again to the receptionist who said she'd pass the script request to the nurse on duty. I can't wait to hear back from them.

Husband says it's safe for me to walk the driveway so I'm going to attempt to get a 20 minute walk in. I did my 20 minutes of & 20 minutes of already. I suspect that I won't hit my 7k step count, but if I can get close I'll be happy. Yay, exercise.

    Heidiknits,
    @Heidiknits@mastodon.social avatar

I'm 1200 steps away from 7k but that's ok. I walked (carefully) outside for 34 minutes. It's lightly snowing & rather peaceful. I came in because I was getting cold even though I was sweating. That's usually a sign that my body's had enough & it's going into panic/fight or flight mode. An hour of movement is nothing to roll my eyes at.

Now to shower because I stink. Giggles

Photo is my driveway in the center of snowy ground & trees. Gray skies.

Today at the food bank we gave out toys & other wish list gifts for clients, along with $50 gift cards to each family for our local market. (One anonymous family in town donated all the gift cards- 100 in total. Incredibly generous!!)

    Heidiknits,
    @Heidiknits@mastodon.social avatar

Today at to food bank I went through donations that included:

An old remote control (dirty & sticky)
    An unopened calendar from 2003
2 sticks of deodorant, expired 1997
    A broken jewelry box
Opened bottle of Avon hand lotion, expired in 2016
    Used nail files
Coffee mug with dried coffee in the bottom (yes, moldy)
Moth-holed sweater (I rescued this for mending practice!)

We don't need any of these things. Please don't donate obvious junk.
