I cannot logically discuss Israel/Gaza with people who believe this atrocity began with Hamas war crimes on 10/7.

If you ignore a 60 year illegal military occupation, 700K illegal settlements, a two decade blockade, 7000 Palestinians indefinitely detained in Israeli prison w/o charge, 800 Palestinian children indefinitely detained in Israeli prison w/o charge & denied access to counsel or parents, & at least 240 Palestinians killed by IDF from 1/1-10/6/23—then you are not engaging in good faith

RockerDoc,
@RockerDoc@mastodon.social avatar

@QasimRashid I agree with you about these tangled underpinnings, and the ironic, tragic turn of Israel’s hawks to apartheid.

I wonder if we’re most effective in persuading others by ignoring that, and just acknowledging the brutal terrorism of Hamas’ actions on 10/7, instead focusing on Netanyahu’s current genocidal war crimes?

I am going to answer this question for everyone:

My answer is here:

https://mastodon.social/

Remember:

There were possible crimes, but tax and reporting crimes are not election interference.

There is also a circular thing with Cohen and Pecker telling the court that they expected Trump to pay back the hush money payments.

If they expected to get paid back, it was a loan to Trump and not a contribution. Right?

RockerDoc,
@RockerDoc@mastodon.social avatar

@Teri_Kanefield @imbou Have you seen this recap? They review the case in some detail, and argue that the case for predicate crimes is actually very strong, so that conviction is likely.

RockerDoc,
@RockerDoc@mastodon.social avatar

@Teri_Kanefield @imbou Yes, I recognize the clarity of your thoughts, and am wary of the fear-mongering pundit class, as you say.

Yet, having lost large swathes of my family in the holocaust, I share the existential dread of looming fascism that many feel. And, though I accept that voting, not trying people in court, is what will save democracy (or not), it still matters: (1/2)

RockerDoc,
@RockerDoc@mastodon.social avatar
  1. to instill and sustain some trust in our democratic institutions, people need to feel that justice is carried out. If not, they’ll turn away from democracy, abandon it.

  2. Something like a quarter or third of Trump voters say they won’t vote for him if he is a convicted felon. So it might make the difference in the 2024 elections… (2/2)

A Texas judge has ruled that a high school was not violating the CROWN Act by punishing student Darryl George for the length of his dreadlocks. George has been in in-school suspension or at an off-site disciplinary program for most of the school year since August. The school said that George's hair violated a dress code regarding length of boys' hair; the family argued that protective hairstyles — which are covered by the CROWN act — require a certain amount of length. The family plans to appeal the decision.

The authors are political science professors at Stony Brook.

Their point: The biggest divide isn’t by party.

The biggest divided is by involvement in politics.

The most vocal voices from social media, who are amplified by the mainstream media, come from a relatively small group.

Echoing what Dannagal Young had to say in “Wrong: How Media, Politics, and Identity Drive our Appetite for Misinformation," the authors talk about 2 sets of relatively small groups of hyper-engaged partisans.

RockerDoc,
@RockerDoc@mastodon.social avatar

@Teri_Kanefield I agree completely about the outrage cycle over politics, the hyper-involve$ minority on both sides, and our information disruption.

But aren’t there things we should be outraged over? Like the overt creep of fascism, threatening to swallow democracy both here and abroad. Or skyrocketing inequality, or our collective failure to deal with the climate crisis that is enveloping us. I sometimes think that the outrage cycle is a tool for distracting us from the big stories.
