Having lived in Malaysia and Thailand and Indonesia, I put all the hot sauce at once to try to feel something, but don’t (the black Yucateco sauce, not pictured, is a slight tingle but very faint). All of these are just like, flavor. At least they’re tasty!

In my part of the world people chew on raw Birds Eye chillies for fun so

SRDas,
@SRDas@mastodon.online avatar

@skinnylatte yucateco green and red habanero sauces are great, flavorful and hot. Chipotle one is milder.
Have you tried matouks ? (Calypso sauce and one other - habanero based; Caribbean )

Sure there are a lot of 'real' American foods but I'm grateful to have eaten and learned to make really well what I think are 2 quintessentially "American" dishes - burgers and hot wings.

Convention oven baked these - 420 ⁰F from frozen for an hour in the preheating oven, then sauce tossed.

Wings coated with a yellow orange sauce in a steel bowl

There’s a discussion on LinkedIn where a few people are saying they feel a 150K salary is enough for private schools for multiple kids and nannies and mortgages in the Bay Area and… that’s when you know those are the people with inherited wealth because, absolutely not

The math doesn’t math (after taxes? in this economy? Of 6-15K monthly mortgages? 3-5K childcare bills?)

SRDas,

Round 2 and there's 🍆 and 🥔 slices pakoras / pakodas too
(Skipped the sliced rounds of 🧅 because round 1)

Seasoned the Bengali way - just a bit of salt, red chile powder and nigella (kalonji, black onion seed) in the batter

Being from where I am in the world, my words for ingredients are in Malay, Teochew, Hokkien, Tamil (there’s no order to which food items are in which language. They simply.. are. Some fish we use the Malay names, some fish we use the other names. Same with veggies)

And now that I am in N America I am re-learning some words in Cantonese

I thought I couldn’t get ‘kang kung’ here but learned it’s actually called ‘ong choy’

@skinnylatte @thepoliticalcat interesting! I've never seen seer outside of India.
I love fishbase to figure out names.
Typing in seer gets me to this [and surmai and tenggiri check out too].
Fascinatingly - I knew of the Tamil name as Vajaram - but not as Savara as in the pic/poster - that's the same in Japanese! (sawara for Spanish mackerel - ok maybe slightly diff)

@skinnylatte @thepoliticalcat ok hello - looked up sawara [japan, fish] as I was talking to Kid1 and it's listed also as "Japanese seer fish"

Simple traditional soup.

Boil water, drop ginger, onions, tomatoes, and dried Rosella flowers (instead of lemon). Drop the fish. Serve when you feel it's ready according to taste.

@Deus what's it called? The traditional name

SRDas,

@Deus I figured. But knowing the words Sangha chhum yields so much more than what it literally translates to. So Thank you.

On Friday morning, I will defend my dissertation.

The research explores how congressional staffers make policy decisions at the national level. I used to work in the Senate, which inspired this journey into the social sciences.

(Friday is also the first day of my kids' Spring Break, so they'll be coming along which should be interesting).

For those curious about the topic, I share a bit about the research on my substack. More results will there soon https://sheril.substack.com/p/a-dissertation-on-democracy

SRDas,

@vaporware I haven't played games in a long time. (Maybe showing my age but) memory got cheap so fast everything had to bloat to fill that. I still remember so fondly thegames - simple punches and kicks (but roundhouse, jumps all of that) in a 48K game (on a ZX spectrum way back). Then even Doom. Zelda and post things got way out of whack/budget
