Jay-Z's "My First Song" is in 3/4, right?

Jay's flow is in triplets, but when I try to count the beat I feel a 4/4 sometimes and a 3/4 others.

I don't know much about music theory and time signatures, so help me understand this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=colv2Wy2q7E

SallyStrange,
@SallyStrange@eldritch.cafe avatar

@docpop I would characterize it as 6/8. Rather than 1-2-3, 1-2-3, it's 1-2-3-4-5-6, 1-2-3-4-5-6. Speed it up a bit and it's an Irish jig meter. But in places, especially the chorus, he starts acting like it's 2/4 and the groups of 3 within the 6-beat measure are triplets within the 2/4. Like this:

1-2-3 | 4-5-6
1 | 2

If that makes sense?

It's called a hemiola when people superimpose rhythms like that (not to be confused with a hematoma which is when you have a blood bruise). African polyrhythms are famous for this

SallyStrange,
@SallyStrange@eldritch.cafe avatar

@docpop Talking about this reminded me of this Nas song, "Heaven," which is also 6/8 and uses hemiola quite a bit.

@aidan @docpop rap is pretty solidly 4/4 most of the time. Makes it easier to rhyme over the beat I'm sure. Someone has probably done a rap song in 5/4 or 7/8 but I can't think of any off the top of my head

Can economic growth be decoupled from emissions? Yes, for sure, easily even.

Can economic growth be decoupled from environmental degradation in general? Absolutely not. The sheer throughput of materials through the economy, from extraction to waste disposal, must decrease. If we address GHG emissions in isolation from topsoil and biodiversity loss, we will fail to preserve the ecosystems on which we depend for life.

It's official: animals and bugs are people.

I think plants are people too, but there's no scientific declaration to that effect. Yet.

Watching the bear vs man in forest stories & I remember when our 9-year-old son said some boys at recess offered to play with him if 'he hugged & kissed a girl.'

He replied, "No, that's inappropriate," & told us he didn't mind not being able to play with those boys after all. Later his teacher shared she was happy he stood up to peer pressure.

Y'all—it's never too early to teach boys about consent & boundaries. Have the convo. Then again. And again. Boys will be the boys we teach them to be.

When Black people say "White people are dangerous," I don't feel "demeaned" by virtue of being a member of "a certain group." Because I understand that generalizations are just that, general statements that aren't meant to apply in every single possible situation. What's stopping you from developing the requisite emotional intelligence to do the same when you hear negative generalizations about men?

I would still appreciate an answer to the question of why you keep likening men to oppressed groups instead of dominant groups.

I need some new science fiction to read, who has some suggestions? I don't like military sci-fi. For reference, my favorite series is the Expanse, I also enjoyed Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, I love Robert Charles Wilson's books. I mostly enjoy space operas and unique stories about technology, for example I really liked the recent book Mountain in the Sea about AI and intelligent octopus. Suggestions from the awesome Bookstodon community? @bookstodon #Bookstodon #Scifi #ScienceFiction

@Jennifer @bookstodon I'm almost finished with Sarah Gailey's "The Mirror Wife" and it's blowing my mind! Scifi/horror really but with a strong feminist focus. Can't wait to see if my suspicions about the MC's clone are confirmed.

Kendrick Lamar just dropped ANOTHER song. Drake is over. Khadija Mbowe is live, breaking down the lyrics. Check it now because there's swearing, weed, copyrighted music, and allegations of pedophilia, so she might just delete it later.

In 1968, massive campus protests against the Vietnam war spread to the Democratic national convention in Chicago that year, which became a violent confrontation between protesters and police. The result was the election of Republican Richard Nixon, who enormously escalated the war, including the invasion and mass bombing of Cambodia.

@CivilityFan well the whole premise of the OP and this thread seems to be that student protesters need to "learn some lessons" from the student protests of the late 60s and early 70s. And you're sort of dancing around it, but that lesson must be that they shouldn't protest, otherwise the more evil fascist will win instead of the less evil fascist.

Please, correct me if I'm wrong. I really love being wrong, especially about this sort of thing.

SallyStrange,
@SallyStrange@eldritch.cafe avatar

@CivilityFan All you're telling me is that you got got by the propagandists, the same way contemporaries of MLK and Gandhi got got. The violence has been overwhelmingly initiated by agents of the state and fascists. That's simply a fact. Repeating Biden's lie that the protesters can be generalized to be violent doesn't make it true.

Even if you weren't working off a false premise, "avoid playing into the hands of a press that wants to demonize them" is an incredibly vague recommendation. If put into practice, it can easily backfire since the press will demonize them no matter what they do.

Thanks for nothing. I really wanted to be wrong.

Eric Adams, NYC, at a press conference this afternoon/morning etc (via Sky News)

"Young people are being influenced by those who are professionals at radicalising our children. I’m not going to allow that to happen."

@firefly @Chip_Unicorn @bookstodon oh hi, you seem nice. No, I enjoyed the read because it was a good story. However given that I have friends who were directly affected by his antics, I have mixed feelings about the prospect of enjoying any more of his writing.

Anything else in "other people's business" I can help you out with?
