You receive a call on your phone.
The caller says they're from your bank and they're calling about a suspected fraud.

"Oh yeah," you think. Obvious scam, right?

The caller says "I'll send you an in-app notification to prove I'm calling from your bank."

Your phone buzzes. You tap the notification This is what you see.

Still think it is a scam?

@simonwood I tend to be suspicious. The only time my bank ever called me was from the security dept and I refused to believe it was them and called back on the main number and asked to be transferred.

That’s not to say that I wouldn’t be taken in by a different fraud, of course

Lidl is shaking up UK in more ways than just their pricing model.

This month they have doubled the full-pay maternity & adoption leave available to their staff to 28 weeks.

The battle for retail staff (see Sainsbury's pay rise posted yesterday) is starting to have some benefits for those prepared to take these jobs.

Its good to see our current travails are having some (some!) benefits for .

(Interestingly Tesco is also moving in this direction)

@ChrisMayLA6 and yet - anecdote alert - there seems to be a rapid turnover of staff at my local Lidl

Before anyone gets angry about a jury giving the "wrong" verdict - remember

  • They saw all the evidence and you didn't.
  • They had instructions and you didn't
  • They may think the accused is guilty but are not persuaded there is enough evidence for conviction
  • The prosecution may have done a terrible job and left things uninvestigated
  • They may think the law is unfair and unjust

The loss of agricultural research in the UK is chronic but nobody seems interested. There used to be a network of university and institute research farms, but they've mostly gone now.

The death of Rothamsted would be the final nail. There are research programmes there which have been going on for hundreds of years. https://www.theguardian.com/science/2024/feb/08/uk-leading-agricultural-research-facility-rothamsted-facing-funding-crisis

Here's a question nobody has asked before;

If a coconut is spinning by itself in zero gravity, what is happening to the liquid inside? Is it spinning or remaining stationary?

So what's the problem with an elected Muslim politician saying "Allahu Akbah?" when they win a seat?

Surely that's no difference than (for example) a Catholic crossing themselves or someone saying "Thank the Lord"

Ok but this doesn't illustrate the problem with private General Practice;

You can't be referred to NHS consultants
You can't get NHS pharmacy prescriptions
If you have scans, NHS doctors cannot access them

In fact the only way you can be transferred to an NHS hospital is if you are so ill that you are admitted as an emergency

Not surprised people in their early 20s are suffering from mental health issues;

The 16-18 education system is stupidly stressful for many, with a not insignificant number struggling with gender dysphoria

They've lived through COVID, making the last year of school and/or uni completely messed up

They can't get housing

They can't get permanent work

They're constantly applying for jobs

They have no money and/or time, few friends, not much life

What did you expect?

From an artist's point of view, is there any difference between you buying a donated CD from a charity shop and downloading pirated music from a torrent site?

Neither gives the artists, songwriters, producers, publishers, or distributors any money.

Neither reports to a charts authority to show popularity.

Both have the same impact on secondary revenue like gig tickets & merchandise.

Unpopular opinion: Sherlock Holmes is not a detective. More a cold-reading mystic. More Shaman than Sherlock.

Almost none of the original stories stand up. They are great atmospheric, charismatic, characterful literature. But they are not usually rational.

In that way, Cumberbatch does a faithful portrayal.

What cooking direction shook you to the very core with how bloody good it is, and you’ve done it that way ever since?

For me, it was discovering that traditional bolognese ragu uses celery, carrot, and milk, and has no garlic.

Milk. In a bolognese.

But believe, it’s incredible.

WEEK 33: This twat thought it was funny to visit Liverpool's Gaza Solidarity Encampment and blast "Rule Brittania" at them.
The students who were woken up chanted "Free Palestine" until he went away 😂

Sbectol,

@fkamiah17 ironic and sad. The flag-waving and anthem singing British rump seem to think that the (white) English are the only group who might want justice and not to be slaves.

As if the Palestinians are just going to roll over and say "oh yes, sorry you are right. Your song has persuaded me that only the British deserve freedom. How wrong we were.."
