Would not suggest NixOS first off - it’s great, requires some experience

I don’t use LinuxMint myself - I’m told it’s friendly for first time users
The LinuxMint ISO should let you run it as a trial before installation
F12 for boot menu (as GoatsLive said above) - try it before installation - it may have the facilities you require or it may not

Back up all your data before installing any new operating system
