This is incredibly concerning, I wish I could use other OS exclusively for my work, but Windows is still the only place for a lot of dev tools. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/05/microsofts-new-recall-feature-will-record-everything-you-do-on-your-pc/

Winamp is going open-source. kinda weird to announce the release so many months before, but still cool. I'm a bit worried about the call for "global collaboration" though, almost seems like they are just trying to outsource development to the community. Especially since it looks like they are trying to do a "spotify alike" platform https://about.winamp.com/press/article/winamp-open-source-code

SpookyDoom,
@SpookyDoom@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink the article only says that it's going to be source available, though. For it to be OpenSource they would have to adopt one of the open source licenses. As is it rather sounds like they want the benefits of open source without actually putting the player under a permissive license like Apache, MIT or GPL

That is quite a substantial amount. Call me crazy but I think manager and CEO wages are out of ballance.

Started a new sculpting project in Blender Sculpt Mode.

I love SDF modeling, but I also like to remain adroit in traditional 3D sculpting. Both techniques have their own charm.

In this stage I'm determining the global shapes and add some crude first details.

More'll follow soon.

"After testing the set for a month, I can confirm few jump ropes are as well-made as Crossrope’s, and its workouts and community offer a lot of value for jumping enthusiasts. Yet, at $199, plus a $12 monthly subscription, it’s only for those committed to jumping consistently — not casual users. "

How can one write that paragraph and NOT reconsider a lot of life choices?

Back in 2017 I bought a Wacom Cintiq tablet for 3D sculpting (connected to the last iMac with an NVIDIA GPU).

The Cintiq didn't deliver the experience I hoped for, so I soon sold it again, but I did enjoy running the legendary Deluxe Paint pixel editor on it, via the FS-UAE Amiga emulator.

From the late 1980s to the late 1990s I used "DPaint" on a daily basis, creating graphics for games, demos, TV shows and commercials. ❤

@metin DPaint IV ... my first love from the Amiga500. It was so legendary that i remember specifically that I wanted to get it on my first PC and somehow managed to get a hold of a second hand disk version but it wasn't the one with the animator in it yet.
Also the first 3D game engine I tried to learn besides modding Duke3D mentioned in the book that DPaint was pretty much the perfect drawing program.
*sigh - the memories

Seeing it on a Wacom feels unreal. XD

Which one is your favorite now?

“Last year, I had a life-changing experience at 90 years old. I went to space, after decades of playing an iconic science-fiction character who was exploring the universe. I thought I would experience a deep connection with the immensity around us, a deep call for endless exploration.
"I was absolutely wrong. The strongest feeling, that dominated everything else by far, was the deepest grief that I had ever experienced.
"I understood, in the clearest possible way, that we were living on a tiny oasis of life, surrounded by an immensity of death. I didn’t see infinite possibilities of worlds to explore, adventures to have, or living creatures to connect with. I saw the deepest darkness I could have ever imagined, contrasting so starkly with the welcoming warmth of our nurturing home planet.
"This was an immensely powerful awakening for me. It filled me with sadness. I realized that we had spent decades, if not centuries, being obsessed with looking away, with looking outside. I did my share in popularizing the idea that space was the final frontier. But I had to get to space to understand that Earth is and will stay our only home. And that we have been ravaging it, relentlessly, making it uninhabitable."

@unlambda @Natanox @mral @trechnex @didgebaba This video is everything William Shattner seemed to have realized about humanity summed up in one minute. You just have to marvel at the beauty of the utter ugliness of the moment.
It's also a very good allegory of why we're fucked if we keep on going our current path in the speed we're currently still at.

And why I absolutely agree with Bernie Sandars that billionaires shouldn't exist.

@djlink Yeah. Back then games weren't released as frequent as today. And for 100 bucks they had to last a while. Aaah good times.

Battletoads frustrated me too much, though. The music from some games back then really went much harder than it neded to. And it was awesome!

Good news for everyone terrified that Canva are going to ruin Affinity products now that they have bought them.

Affinity and Canva have released 4 pledges (including perpetual licenses!) that should make users breathe a LOT easier.

https://gamefromscratch.com/affinity-and-canva-release-pledge/

SpookyDoom,
@SpookyDoom@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@GameFromScratch I mean ... I really don't like being so cynical but I don't trust these pledges any more. It probably means that at least version 3 will still be perpetual but if the last few decades and especially the last few years have taught me anything, it's that good intentions are also very flexible and big corporations buying smaller studios rarely ends well.

GameFromScratch, to gamedev

Canva have just acquired Affinity/Serif, makers of the best Adobe alternatives out there, Affinity Designer, Photo and Publisher. Well known for being affordable and subscription free, I pray they remain this way!

https://gamefromscratch.com/canva-buy-affinity/

SpookyDoom,
@SpookyDoom@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@GameFromScratch
This happened too often already and at some point there are no places left to go. Ultimately if there are only subscription services left people can just as well go back to the original.

So the better question is - what can we do to get some free and reliable Open Source alternatives going?

And no - GIMP is neither there nor close to it. 😕

djlink, to random
@djlink@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Oh no, Affinity got purchased by Canva. I wonder if it's time to buy those perpetual licenses before it moves to rentaware. https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/press/newsroom/canva-statement/

SpookyDoom,
@SpookyDoom@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink Open Source really seems to be the most reliable type of Software left. There are very few companies that do software subscriptions right

Actually the only ones that I can remember are Jetbrains with their development environments. If you stay on the subscription you pay less each consecutive year over three years and you always keep the last LTS as perpetual after each 12 complete months.

But in terms of reliability - Open Source all the way, baby!
So ... who can tackle PS, ID and AI?

SirLich, to godot
@SirLich@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

One of the weirdest things about Godot is that nearly any possible extension or API change you can think of already exists in a github issue (usually closed, due to migration to the suggestions repo).

Even really obscure stuff has been thought of in 2017, requested, and sometimes even a non-merged PR created.

I just wish these improvements actually made it into the engine more often :(

SpookyDoom,
@SpookyDoom@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @godotengine I'm still kinda torn on C# ... one one hand I really like that it is statically typed much better than GDScript. On the other hand building the project and still not really being on par with lots of things labeled work in progress plus the lack of learning ressources really are a bit of a turnoff.

    Still cool to see progress on this. I'll eagerly await all the former Unity people to help push this further along now. 😅

    When I was a youngster in the late 1980s, I formed an Amiga game dev team with 2 friends.

    Before making games, we started by trying to sell game music that used minimal RAM, made with our music editor SIDmon.

    To promote our game music, this energetic music module was composed by our musician Ramon Braumuller. The file, including tiny sampled sounds, is only 22 kilobytes.

    Check the hashtag for more tunes.

    SpookyDoom,
    @SpookyDoom@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @metin the Amiga as well as the C64 had some wicked cool sound chips. Even if I really like NES, SNES and Genesis/MegaDrive chiptunes. The Amiga and the C64 had a ballance between smooth and crispy punch none of the others could really match.

    I think the first time after the Amiga i was really suprised by how awesome music in a few kb could sound was in Unreal and Unreal Tournament.
    For me Turrican II started it and unreal Tournament pretty much ended an era. Kind of since it's a different tech
