I'm not saying Boeing murdered the whistleblowers. I'm saying try not to run a company such that people think you MIGHT have.

StarkRG,
@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

@petrillic I think it might be possible to do that while still also murdering whistleblowers.

The United Fruit Company (now Chiquita) got away with hiring the CIA to overthrow a government, and most people didn't know about it until somewhat recently.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1954_Guatemalan_coup_d%27%C3%A9tat

Oh, right, they also massacred their employees.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banana_Massacre

Murder by corporations is legal in the US, encouraged, even. It's embezzlement that's illegal because that's stealing from rich people.

@rightardia The solution to homelessness was to give homeless people homes? Wow, what innovative, out-of-the box thinking. Next you're gonna tell me that the solution to world hunger is to give people food.

This is the worst of NYTimes cynicism. They waited forever to say Trump lies because they didn't want to ascribe motive. But here they do. I'd say Biden is forgiving students' debt because he cares for them. The Times, in its nihilism, sees only politics.

StarkRG,

@jeffjarvis Biden shamefully continues to fulfil his election promises in a blatant attempt to earn more votes.

Any company that is so important that its collapse would cause extreme harm to society, it shouldn't be privately operated. It also shouldn't be a for-profit organization since other things obviously must take priority over profit.

If the supreme court jumps in and overturns the Jan. 6 convictions of 100s of people who attacked the capitol it will be one of the most politically charged actions taken by this court and in a politically charged environment.

There are many laws that might need revision, scrutiny, but they reached out through space and time to grab this hot potato.

It's a joke.

StarkRG,
@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

@futurebird First we need more people to just acknowledge that a quarter of the Supreme Court was inappropriately appointed and that rampant corruption has been taking place for decades. Equate the supreme court with an elitist social club issuing decrees. Make common responses to any news related to the Supreme Court be scoffs and derision.

Politics in the US is completely broken and I'm not smart enough to see a way to fix it, but I can at least acknowledge that it is, in fact, broken.

So, lemmie get this straight, the people advising the US government on how to safely implement AI in critical infrastructure are the people who would most benefit financially from implementing AI in any way whatsoever? That's like taking advice from oil companies on whether climate change is an issue. Oh, they're doing that too, great.

One thing that perplexes me is that we are "sold" about how great and accurate war weapons are ... But the second they shoot/bomb innocent people the weapons become not accurate

Hugz & xXx

StarkRG,

@melissabeartrix They seemed pretty accurate to me. They perfectly targeted four vehicles known to be transporting aid workers. I think even entertaining the idea that these killings weren't entirely purposeful is dangerous.

I've stumbled across a new term: "Not going forward." In the context of a TV series it means it was picked up and then cancelled before a single episode airs, usually before a significant amount of it was filmed. It seems like a relatively new phrase (or, at least, new to this context), the earliest I can see it being used is 2018.

Well this is a rather interesting discovery. If you're finding that your search results are all AI-generated garbage, try excluding the word "Amazon" (on duck duck go you tack -"amazon" to your search, google used to do that too, not sure now). There's still AI garbage in there, but it definitely seems to have improved the quality of the search results.

I tried this out when I realized that each and every AI crap page was an Amazon affiliate and I wondered what I'd get if I excluded them.

Stop trying to make language ‘funner.’ Grammar rules exist for a reason. https://wapo.st/49Wpllv

StarkRG,
@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

@jeffjarvis English doesn't have grammar rules, it has sets of common grammar conventions. Not everyone follows the same set of conventions, but it's still English. Example, the split infinitive "rule" was introduced by someone with a hard-on for Latin, but split infinitives have been part of English for longer than it's been Modern English. Same with ending sentences with prepositions.

Judging people based on their use of English is no less bigoted than judging them based on skin color.

AI search DOES NOT WORK. A working search engine, upon finding no results, tells the user that it has found no results. An AI search engine just chooses things at random.

Not "Show users what they want" but "we know better than your users, we show them what they need."

Windows is wild.

Just installed Win11 in a VM from an iso downloaded from Microsoft this morning. Twice during installation it stopped to look for updates.

I restarted it to finish installing something, and it had to install updates.

WHAT UPDATES?

StarkRG,
@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

@DJDarren You need to update the updates to prepare the updated updates to be updated with updated updates prior to the updated updates updating.

The popularity of Reese's peanut butter stuff (cups, pieces, etc.) really goes to show that putting chocolate and peanut butter together is such a good idea that it barely matters if the chocolate is foul and calling it "peanut butter" is really pushing the boundaries of the definition.

    Keith is short for Keither.

    StarkRG,
    @StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

    @Binder It used to be spelled Kæther but that spelling fell out of fashion after Einstein published “On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies”, his Special Theory of Relativity, making the long term reliance on the outdated concept unnecessary.

    Something similar happened with the name Phil, which was originally short for Philogiston.
