Yeah, you're really gonna see which companies are just gonna allow the AI to scrape all their stuff now. I'm a copyleft/creative commons kinda guy. But if you have art that you don't want stolen, the answer is simple.

MAKE YOUR OWN WEBSITE and put your art there (edit: and use that Glaze type of stuff on your art that wrecks AI, just to be sure)! Neocities is SO easy to set up! Or your own domain and hosting via porkbun, GoDaddy (non-WordPress) - anything at all other than proprietary/walled stuff!

@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

@jake4480 If an AI gobbles up something with a share-alike license (or other "viral" licenses like the GPL), shouldn't that mean anything the AI produces is also covered by that license?

AI generated content is just well-masked Lorem Ipsum. It's there for no reason except to fill space.

Calling pet ants "the girls" never gets old. I still think the idea of making a book called "What Women Want" that is just a guide to ant care and observations about things that worker ants and queens enjoy has legs.

so so so many legs.

If I can go to the library and borrow a book or piece of media for free to return on later date, what's the functional difference between that and downloading that piece of media from a pirate site? I mean, support your local library and all that, but there's something funny to me about how we split hairs between borrowing and stealing when it comes to a format that is lent away for free and can reproduce infinite copies of itself

StarkRG,
@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

@rootcompute That's not really a valid argument. Libraries pay rather large licensing fees, they're not just buying a book (or whatever) at standard bookstore rates. Movie rental stores also had/have (for the very rare still in existence) to pay licensing fees.

StarkRG,
@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

@rootcompute I accept that piracy is stealing, however, at least for the stuff I've pirated, it's stealing from corporations who clearly have more money than they can really be trusted with.

StarkRG,
@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

@rootcompute It's up to you to determine what you consider your ethical line to be. I wouldn't have a qualm about pirating a textbook, for example, they're already a scam by the publishers, but I'd feel bad about pirating a novel, even if they do only get 15% or whatever of the purchase price.

Home is the only place you don't go "to." You go "to work." You go "to school." You go "to the shop", but you don't go "to home." You just go home.

StarkRG,
@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

@countcol Some accents say "go work".

Interestingly, though, it wouldn't be too unreasonable to "go shop", though usually you'd say "go shopping". Maybe "home" is a verb in this context rather than a destination.

I am not a follower, I'll take suggestions with solid reasoning under strong advisement, but I don't follow orders well. I am not a leader, even when people know me well and know my ideas are good more often than not, I apparently don't present then in a way that is trustworthy. Therefore I've gotten out of the way.

My thought on Neuralink implanting tech in human heads for the first time:

Brain implants are one of those technologies where the MTBF for the implant MUST exceed the MTBF of the implantee. And there must be lifetime after-sales support, Or else the execs who made the decision to pull support should go to prison for the rest of their lives.

StarkRG,
@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

@cstross There are people with early vision implants that went blind again when the company went out of business. I feel like these kinds of things need to be made open source by law. At the very least they should be required to release the source upon either going out of business or discontinuing the service.

StarkRG,
@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

@SteveClough @cstross I get the desire to keep such cutting edge research in-house, but if that house has collapsed, the source code for driving devices already installed should be made public. That would at least allow other people to take up maintaining the software either on a volunteer basis or being hired.

Personally, I wouldn't be comfortable having any devices installed in me that I don't control in their entirety and that means being able to install my own code.

StarkRG,
@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

@SteveClough @cstross Yeah, it definitely wouldn't be an easy transition, but if the source code is available, it's at least possible. Especially if you could hire some of the people who worked for the now defunct company. Without the source code it just isn't at all. You could, maybe, reverse engineer something, but you'd have to dig the implants out first anyway.

StarkRG,
@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

@SteveClough @cstross That would certainly be ideal, I'm not sure how it would work financially, though. If you put it all on the company creating the devices, the cost of entry would be completely prohibitive. You could, instead, make a centralised government or non-profit organization that could maintain them separately from the originating companies, but I don't see any US politicians getting behind that and it'd be a hard sell even in more progressive countries.

In Norway, the word "Texas" is used to mean "wild" (as in, "Things got real texas downtown last night"). Snopes explains how that came to be. Tell us in the comments your favorite slang from your neck of the woods.

StarkRG,
@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

@CultureDesk It's not my neck of the woods anymore, but, in Japan, buffet restaurants are called "Viking" restaurants (or Biking, since there's no voiced labiodental fricative, "V", sound in Japanese) because "Smörgåsbord" would be very complicated to transliterate into Japanese and, I guess, because Vikings originated in Scandanavia? Look, it's a loose connection, but no looser than Texas.

Canada should maintain its multinational approach to the Israeli GOV/Palestinian conflict by defining its own position to expressly and positively reject toxic tribalism, reaffirming its commitment to multiculturalism, and compartmentalizing itself from the American support of the Israeli GOV.
