@Jyoti I want the moving walkway type mass transit depicted in Asimov's Caves of Steel that are made up of parallel walkways that progressively get faster the further towards the middle you get so that you can just walk on and walk off but are still able to cover large distances if necessary. I'm pretty sure they're unfeasible from an engineering perspective, but I still want them.

@cstross @kcarp @dymaxion Airlines can and do replace aircraft without notice. Unless an airline actually doesn't have any Boeing aircraft, you can't be sure the plane you'll be on won't be one. Even then, though, the airline can foist you onto another airline if they want to and you won't have any recourse except to cancel your trip without refunds because, contractually, all they need to do is make sure you're able to get to your destination without injury.

What a great line up tonight! Tonight’s TOS and TNG episodes are some of my favorites. Sadly I’m still at this chess tournament 😱 so I’ll see you Tuesday night.

TOS (8ET): Trouble With Tribbles
TNG (9ET): Conspiracy
DS9 (10ET): Equilibrium
VOY (11ET): Nothing Human
ENT (midnight): The Forge, Part 1

@mikemathia One of the most widely used terms in rocketry development, usually applied to missions that concluded much earlier than expected, is RUD, Rapid Unplanned Disassembly.

Also, I'm not sure if it has an official name, but one situation I've often faced is "well, it's working now, so I guess that's what's important" where you spend hours or days troubleshooting something before giving up, and returning everything to the original state, only to discover the problem has vanished.

Dear @AP and every other news organization.

is NOT a "prank" so stop characterizing it as such.

A prank is "a practical joke or mischievous act" (Oxford)

Swatting is neither.

It is filing a false emergency (911) report with the goal of having armed cops (SWAT team) descend upon an address.

It is criminal.

StarkRG,
@StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

@kegill @AP It's also harassment and potentially deadly. In my opinion, in addition to being charged with making a false report and harassment, such "prankers" should be charged with attempted murder.

In 2019 when I visited the Boeing Future of Flight Museum in Everett, WA, I was tickled to see the gift shop full of 737 MAX swag. This was just after the plane had been pulled from service. I giggled as I purchased a 737 MAX lanyard.

When I cheekily wore it to my corporate job with my security card attached, my husband called me macabre.

My take was that the lanyard served as a not-so-subtle reminder of the dangers of corporate groupthink and the deadly profit motives that underpin our economy and thwart effective regulatory oversight.

P.S. We took the tour of the gargantuan Boeing manufacturing facility and the guide never mentioned the 737 MAX. LOL

    Still don’t understand why Apple allows in-app browsers (have been ranting about this for years) https://mstdn.social/@noellemitchell/111689747161147289

    StarkRG,
    @StarkRG@myside-yourside.net avatar

    @thomasfuchs Because Apple (and Google) only care about user safety and privacy as far as they're required to. Occasionally they'll make a big announcement of some safety/privacy/security features, but that's just for PR. If they can get away with making a token effort (and they definitely can), that's as much as they'll do. Maybe if enough people make a fuss over things like this, they'll make a token effort to stop it, but they'll only go as far as they have to to quell the discontent.

    @caseynewton Didn't they already come down hard multiple times on not removing it? Seems like you're giving them way more leeway than they deserve. When someone tells you they're a Nazi sympathizer, believe them, don't ask repeatedly if they are.

    @koz I got a 0.5 steel nozzle specifically for printing with metal filaments but when I went to purchase said filament, the company I usually go to has been out and doesn't look like they're making more.

    And, yeah, I don't expect to use the 0.2 or 0.6 all that much. While I have printed several things I don't care about the look of, but most of them had threads which, I imagine, would get mangled by a large nozzle.
