The attacks on aid workers in Gaza should not surprise us. And I wonder why some people are more outraged by the deaths of these workers than the deaths of innocent civilians including babies. Am I being particularly autistic here? @actuallyautistic

IMO, streaming services should be banned from ending a series with a cliffhanger. We finally got around to watching Severance, two years after it first aired, and it ends with a bloody cliffhanger!

Very annoying, after you put in all that time – you feel like you've been cheated. There's still months to the second season release, and who's to say that won't also end with a cliffhanger? And there's always a danger of a cliffhanger show getting cancelled without a conclusion.

Rather than making me keen to continue, it's more likely to make me drop the series (which I did with Umbrella Academy and The Great after their first seasons ended with cliffhangers). Stop treating my time as unimportant, TV creators.

Susan60,
@Susan60@aus.social avatar

@timrichards

It’s formulaic & done purely for commercial reasons. Obviously they need to leave you with a reason to want to come back, but good characters & setting & an unfinished sub plot or hint of some new issue/crisis developing will be enough if it’s done well.

Susan60,
@Susan60@aus.social avatar

@timrichards

I wonder if it ends up losing people? They get so peeves that they abandon a series. Especially if you’ve binged it & have to wait forever for the next series.

I was noticing that my cat and I seem to share some behaviors, which made me wonder if cats aren't a little bit autistic. Or maybe I'm a little bit cat?

Which gave me the idea to come up with a facetious self-assessment quiz: Are you autistic, or are you a house cat?

Take the quiz to find out!

Partner’s ex is morning the loss of a friend, who died unexpectedly after a respiratory illness. He’d had lung issues since getting Covid, making him more vulnerable.

Susan60,
@Susan60@aus.social avatar

@Caiotekit

It’s sad, but also scary. Vulnerable people have been bearing the brunt of “personal responsibility” on Covid avoidance, which doesn’t work very well. Anyone can become a “vulnerable” person, due to age, disability etc. Some previously fit & healthy people have become vulnerable after getting Covid.

How many people are we willing to write off?

It's my birthday.

6 years ago my 50'th birthday marked a huge transition as my former employer merged with what became my new employer the next day.

(More of that story: https://mcormond.blogspot.com/2023/09/resignation.html )

A few days later I learned my mother's health had turned for the worse, and she only had a few months left to live.

These transitions induced me to accept I'm Autistic. I wish there was a less dramatic path, but I'm thankful to finally be learning who I am.

On one hand, it’s nice to see that we can have noice-canceling headphones, selective earplugs and other kinds of solutions to help and other folks to reduce sensory overload in public places, but I can’t help but think that we should address the problem from the other side: to not create that overload to begin with.
Ok, I get the need for bright light in a shop: you really want to see what you’re buying, you want to choose a fruit/veggie without signs of spoiling, be able to read the label clearly etc.
But all that loud music? Is there really any value in it for the stores? Why do they keep playing it? Were there some actual real studies that have shown that putting on music increases sales?
Like, I have seen many times(and was myself) people leaving store sooner, even without the things they went for, because they couldn’t stand that loud music anymore, but I haven’t seen anyone actually staying in a shopping mall longer because they liked music or something.
So, is there any actual profit for stores in it, or are they just doing that because everyone is used to it?
Does also anyone know if there have been any studies/works on the sensory overload modern cities put on people and ways to reduce it without making things harder for other members of society?

I just downloaded this. I have lots of sensitivities, but they rarely trigger a meltdown/shutdown. Only a few lead to intense discomfort. But it can & does happen occasionally and if I’m in a job with lots of these, they can lead to burnout, a “breakdown”. Maybe I’ve built up “tolerance” by masking, minimising etc. As I become more aware of them, my tolerance seems to be diminishing, which is probably a good thing, because I’m better equipped to reduce stress on my nervous system. But it’s going to make masking harder if & when masking is a better option. @actuallyautistic

I’m in a strange place. Taking an Easter break from a marking project, seeing family etc. Played “Articulate” with friends after dinner last night. My childhood friend & I made an excellent team, but she said I’d be stuffed if I couldn’t use my hands, which made me laugh, but also very happy. I used to use my hands a lot to speak as a kid, but learned to suppress it. I’m glad it’s making a comeback. @actuallyautistic

Interesting read. I’ve not had had either condition, but have probably been close to having a lack of interest in food. When I’m busy, with work or study, food is just fuel & I often don’t realise a need for it until I feel unwell. When I’m not preoccupied, I enjoy flavours, but even then, can lack sufficient motivation to put a lot of effort into planning, shopping & cooking. I made myself do it as a parent, but really appreciate that my partner does most of this on a day to day basis. Cooking is an occasional fun experience for me now, rather than a daily chore. (I do try to cook a meal once every week or 2, because even he tires of it a little, but it’s then a “project” for me, not a “normal” activity.)@actuallyautistic

In the summer, in my rural home, ladies would cover their heads, when bats swoop to catch the mosquitoes that the carbon dioxide of your body attracts.

I have an old home, the wood that bats are attracted to, like old barns, the wood is 100+ years old.

When I replaced windows, I had to go around and manually gather the bats and put them out before the new window. That was 2008. I bought a bat hotel for them. Never saw one since. One year, all our disappeared.

With @actuallyautistic discussing "AI", I thought this Embrace Autism article discussing "Valuing truth over conformity" which was sparked by a talk on "AI" is interesting.

Personal note: I've been confused my entire life about why other people around me don't seek "truth", and also why so many people around me get upset at me when I speak.

My #AutismAcceptance has helped me better understand the previous 5 decades of life.

While we are autistic, we are also human in the broader sense. Denial & minimisation can be potent defence mechanisms for many people. And given that we’re brought up in ableist societies, it’s hardly surprising that many of us absorb ableist attitudes, which can be hard to shake off even after diagnosis/realisation.

I struggle with lies & even defensive self deception, so I guess it’s even harder to “get” when the person practising it is autistic.

"Trump is spending a good chunk of his donations on his legal bills. The Times ran an amazing report about this on Wednesday. Of nearly $85 million in donations, almost a third, $27 million, has gone to legal bills. Hey, at least this time around, he’s apparently actually paying them.

Trump will have money. There’s no use pretending he won’t."

I think I read once that can also show in an aversion of accepting gifts or favors. Do you know any ressource on that?

It came to my mind that I often don't like being invited. Like recently a colleague wanted outof nothing to pay for my coffee. And instead of saying thanks I make it complicated.

I can find it very awkward to accept favours etc, & if I do, to be gracious about it. I think it’s an aversion to feeling indebted? Always much easier when I’ve previously done something for them. My partners worse. (But he’s not neurodivergent. Apparently. 🤔)

If you have ADHD, it's hard to explain to (cishet non-ND) non-ADHDers the Othering you experience at every step of seeking treatment to correct an executive function neurocircuitry aberration/variance.

From day one I've received feedback about my hyperkineticism, hyperverbality, impulse control, inability to follow multiple step tasks, my reactivity, rejection sensitivity.

And people wonder why I've only finally found peace working remotely & by cutting out my parents from my life.

Susan60,
@Susan60@aus.social avatar

@hannu_ikonen

It’s about respect. If I’m doing something that is problematic, & it’s a consequence of my ADHD, & I say that I’m doing all I can to manage it, then that needs to be respected. Other people might not know or understand how that can be, but that doesn’t come into it. They either respect me, or they don’t. And if they don’t…

I just had my 2nd session since realising my autism, the 1st since 5 weeks with my partner with his family. So mainly a catch-up & info dump. Will clarify goals next time.

In the past therapy has been about me info dumping & them validating, helping me to clarify & a few strategies, but I struggled with clear goals.

I feel so much clearer now.

Previous therapy focussed on the impact of external traumas, the loss of loved ones, sexual assault, divorce etc, but ignored my internal pan that wasn’t explained by those traumas. I learned a lot that was useful, but so much was left unexplained. I was still in survival mode.

She reflects back & asks questions to confirm, clarify & express her understanding, & her very expressive face helps with that. I used to feel that I must look the therapist in the eye for the whole session, but I now allow myself to look out the window.

The waiting room is dim lights, soft music…

I used to feel that I had to work hard to convince the therapist, to get them on board with me, to understand, & maybe to like me so they’d be motivated to really work with me.

I think that having a somewhat better understanding of myself means I’m much clearer about boundaries, & that helps soooo much.
