@Tattered@mastodon.social

Time for a proper introduction. I am a literature teacher, mostly retired. I love reading, music, baking, nature & cats. I am learning to boost a lot, which includes my passion for a truly inclusive world, so lots of support for Black, Indigenous, LGBTQIA+, Women, Working Class, & other rights. I understand users who want Mastodon to be a quiet corner, but I am more concerned about what happens if we look the other way when people suffer.

My for the near future of the

Labour wins the next General Election, either as a majority or as a coalition. Either is possible at this point.

Even the must stupid or malicious members of that government realise that Brexit isn't working and renegotiate trade and other agreements.

We end up with EEA with Schengen or some variations thereof. Better but not perfect.

Independence movements in Scotland and Wales gain momentum quickly and eventually the UK devolves into a federal model, or more likely as separate nations under an EEA / EU type arrangements with local equivalents for mutual defence and cross border cooperation.

We could end up with Scotland and Wales in the full EU, even adopting the Euro which solves a boat load of additional problems.

2035 might look very different than 2025 for the UK.

@simonzerafa You have way more trust in the cabal at the helm of Labour than I can bring myself to imagine. Bon chance!

Tattered,
@Tattered@mastodon.social avatar

@simonzerafa I admire optimism. I have, however, been watching Labour surrender their values since Foot lost, and the electorate conned into giving up rights and protections by a press full of football, scandal, and “glamour” to sweeten the propaganda. I cannot imagine a British public with the necessary fire in its belly.

i think a misconception a lot of people hold about growing up afab is that girls are encouraged to express their emotions

yes, girls are allowed a wider emotive range, but this is actually mandated alongside making sure their emotions do not:

  • cause any inconvenience to others, especially men
  • come across as manipulative
  • demand anything of others
  • draw attention to yourself
  • interrupt anything, ever
  • create a "situation"
  • violate the specific social formality of the situation's rules on how, when, and where emotions are to be expressed
  • if out of sight of men, do not potentially cause a "situation" where a man might become liable due to actions of another woman in protection of you

and i'm sure i've forgotten some more

so make sure to express your emotions because it's mandated, but definitely don't violate any of those rules while doing so

@deilann I worked with a teacher/evil bastard who would give lower “participation” grades to girls with “bad attitudes”. Of course, he has been promoted to greater and greater positions of responsibility.

He asked me if I was teaching feminist critical theory “because of having a daughter”. I am very sorry that I never hit him.

Wait - the UK is part of ? That wasn't part of the divorce?

@jerry I imagine the Europeans will continue to enjoy the annual British outrage that they didn’t win. :)

I addition to deleting from my phone, I've removed them from the Firefox completely. That includes their nearly 2 dozen cookies.

Now to remove them from my favorites page.

Please don't boost 's brand of fascist-fawning. They belong to now.

The audience for the CNN townhall w/Trump will be 400 Republicans & GOP-leaning independents

Allowing Trump to appear in front of an audience exclusively comprised of people who are likely sympathetic to Trump -- and then turn over the questions to that group -- is irresponsible

@juddlegum The USA’s Nazi media again.

Imagine those fuckers trying to explain to your grandfather (or grandmother, in plenty of cases), freshly home from Europe in 1945, why they are un-American for thinking a swastika-covered Nazi shouldn't be able to stockpile assault weapons on US soil.

They'd be picking up their goddamn teeth out of the street.

I don't have a dog in this fight - and I haven't paid much attention to the monarchy since the Treaty of Paris - (ok, maybe a little during the unpleasantness around 1812) - but this sentiment resonates with me.

Tattered,
@Tattered@mastodon.social avatar

@WillRobinson For me, the worst decision in British history is letting the b*stards back. Given that this followed our only period of theocratic military dictatorship… It irks me that “our” national anthem involves two figures best left in the past. Give me the Internationale anyway!

    Confession: I have been on that Other Site for the last few hours talking about Tucker Carlson and Don Lemon because ... well, this is a good example of why I do miss search here. I want to see what people are saying; I want to know the latest reporting; and, yes, I want to quote-tweet NYTimes Pitchbot. Now it's OK if the community of Mastodon decides it doesn't want to be a key place for news but I'd regret that. And I'm not speaking so much as a journalist but as news user.

    Tattered,
    @Tattered@mastodon.social avatar

    @jeffjarvis I disagree. I’ve found plenty of detail here. The fighting in the Sudan has less prominence, though I suspect that is also true in Musk’s Nazi playpen.

    Sorry, the sabotage of Twitter is not a “disaster for democracy”—it’s the logical and inevitable endpoint of surveillance capitalist control of our communications infrastructure.

    Those who control a message’s delivery system control the message.

    Twitter was always owned by surveillance capitalists—it NEVER served democracy.

    Tattered,
    @Tattered@mastodon.social avatar

    @atomicpoet Absolutely. Still, Dorsey’s decision to sell to a more ruthless thug might be an indication that the use of the platform was leaning toward the more liberal. After all, one of the first things Musk did was to can all of the ethics people and give the reins to actual Nazis. You are absolutely right; or the deal would not have been made.
