@Tattered@mastodon.social

Time for a proper introduction. I am a literature teacher, mostly retired. I love reading, music, baking, nature & cats. I am learning to boost a lot, which includes my passion for a truly inclusive world, so lots of support for Black, Indigenous, LGBTQIA+, Women, Working Class, & other rights. I understand users who want Mastodon to be a quiet corner, but I am more concerned about what happens if we look the other way when people suffer.

British politics at the moment:

Conservatives: We’re going to do X!

Labour: We oppose doing X. It harms the most vulnerable in society, damages the economy and the environment, and violates our international treaty obligations.

Conservatives: We have a huge majority, so we’ve done X!

Journalists: Will Labour reverse X if it wins the next election?

Labour: No.

“When people want to listen to music they go to Spotify. When people want to study sound recordings as they were originally created, they go to libraries like the Internet Archive. Both are needed. There shouldn’t be conflict here.” - @brewsterkahle

@internetarchive @brewsterkahle Might I humbly suggest that the Archive be moved to a country with a greater commitment to public well-being than that current in the USA? Perhaps a European country where the relevant court might consider your collection to be to the benefit of humanity?

After a weekend of whoppers about X and fighting Mark Zuckerberg, it’s time for the press to take a more skeptical approach to stories about Elon Musk’s social media posts. https://www.platformer.news/p/its-time-to-change-how-we-cover-elon

Fossil fuel companies need to be acquired so they can be phased out.

“Rather than cashing out flows of income as profits, a public energy company could – and would – reinvest cash flows in delivering a decarbonised grid and lowering bills. Lower capital costs for publicly-owned companies, including the lack of a need to pay out dividends, only bolster the fiscal and economic case for public ownership to deliver this urgent task.”

@simon_brooke @ChristineMalec @LordCaramac @Brendanjones Sadly, elections are a capitalist game, designed to hide the oppression of the working class. Whoever you vote for will maintain the capitalist rape of the planet. Starmer is as anti-climate protest as Sunak. Biden just sent the navy to protect tankers. I agree that we need to act, but unless a new party appears, voting isn’t acting.

They knew what was coming and did it to you anyway. Sue them, shame them, heckle them, despise them. These are choices. They are to blame, not society.

    How, I’ve been asked, do people in nonstate societies prevent bad guys from taking over?

    It’s a bit of question begging: it presumes that the state (bad guys who have taken over) is required to prevent other bad guys from taking over.

    But let’s take a serious look at some of the scholarship on how and why nonstate societies aren’t quite as vulnerable to this as people seem to commonly assume.

    This is neither exhaustive nor comprehensive.

    @HeavenlyPossum So, in democracies, our leaders can act swiftly to prevent climate change getting worse, without any interference from private interests? Cool.

    Tattered,
    @Tattered@mastodon.social avatar

    @HeavenlyPossum My apologies, Possum-san. I was responding to my own obsession with thinking about a way to prise power away from the oligarchies wearing the masks of democracy, rather than responding to your well-thought-out thread on alternate forms of self-regulating societies.

    I suppose I am guilty of being too like Marx; focusing on the need for revolution, and not thinking about the conditions that would then follow; which, alas, proved to be an error.

    Mainstream politicians thought adopting far-right policies would keep the far right away from power.

    But beating people at borders, sending them to torture, letting kids drown en masse - all Europe’s immorality & illegality - it’s only fed the bloodlust at the core of far-right extremism.

But if they follow through on ActivityPub, and we can all just use it as a part of Mastodon, via the great third-party clients we know and love, it really will be the best of all worlds. And the things it will focus on — like quote posts, working search, high quality & fast media hosting — may just push the rest of Mastodon to catch up
