Angry at the state of our waterways, and sewage dumping in our seas?

Rob Hopkins shares how 3 Transition groups along the Exe teamed up to turn outrage into local, practical action to restore, protect and celebrate their precious river.

Sustainable Tiverton, Transition Exeter and Transition Exmouth worked together to create Friends of the River Exe (FORE), a vibrant campaign to bring everyone connected to the river together, through festival events, citizen science, conservation and more.

They were supported by a partnership grant from Transition Together seedfunding, made possible by The National Lottery Community Fund and National Lottery Players.

What could you unlock when you join together with others in your area and with a little extra resource?

"It's a movement you can join. It is inspirational, positive, evolving, and if you've made it here, it may well be just what you're looking for...."

Millions went this week. At Shawlands Primary, that means the return of their .

Twice a week, kids & parents gather to wheel the busy city roads to school. By doing it together, it becomes safer, easier & more joyful for kids to cycle to school.

And here they are on the BBC last year, telling the story of their bike bus and the difference it’s making to kids, parents and the streets near them.: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-61599279

Community solutions to the problems of our time - we love it! What do you think? Could it work where you are?

Thanks to Shawlands Bike Bus for letting us sharethe video. Find them on twitter @bikebusshaw and insta at @shawlandsbikebus

Video shows adults and children cycling past a fixed point at the end of a road in Glasgow, with four storey red brick traditional flats along the route.

“It’s not too late. It’s not fine. It’s exactly the time to demand a better world.”

Love this by @ClimateAdam and Rosemary Mosco (Bird and Moon Comics).

The news and our anxiety about it can seem devastating and overwhelming - but there's more to the story. The action we take now will and is making a difference, and, at the same time, much more needs to be done, by more people to make the difference that's needed.

And you don’t have to do it on your own, find or start a local Transition group and together reshape your community to be more resilient, fairer and thrive for the future.

What if... street weren't just for cars? Transition Liverpool is showing what more space for community, greenery and art could do for their city after unveiling their first city centre parklet.

With high rates of air pollution and pedestrian accidents in their city, they worked with local designers and materials to make the modular pop-up structure that can be adapted to many spaces and uses.

It includes seating, planters for pollinator-loving plants and space for events, art or workshops, all in the size of a parking space.

In other cities, parklets have boosted local businesses, air quality and sense of community, and the sPark It project hopes this will be the first of many, with businesses, the council, charities and communities getting involved, and sparking conversation about how street space could be used.

Local architect Ross Neal, who volunteered as a designer on the project, said: “sPark It is all about community. The Transition team wanted to find creative ways to combat climate change, and in Liverpool that means tackling air pollution, making our streets safer for walking, wheeling and cycling, supporting small businesses and finding ways to bring nature and community back into the city.”

Big congrats to the team at Transition Liverpool who’ve been working towards this for years, with funding from the public and a Transition Together seed funding grant.

A close up of one wooden bench on the parklet, with the text ‘Streets weren’t just for cars’.
A view of the whole parklet in the evening sunshine.
A wide view of the parklet in Mann Island in Liverpool City Centre, where it is current displayed. There are tall old and modern buildings in the background. Markings on the road show the wide lines of a road and the outline of a car, so show the comparative scale of the parklet.

What can you transport on a cargo bike? Shopping, kids, friends, your pup and lots more! What would our communities look like if these handy electric bikes were more available?

Now residents of Exmouth can try life with a cargo bike for free thanks to Transition Exmouth’s Execargo bike project.

The used a seed funding grant from Transition Together and The National Lottery Community Fund to pilot a public cargo bike which can be borrowed by local people and businesses for deliveries, trips or errands.

After a brilliant crowdfunding campaign, they bought two bikes and over the last year, they have been used by hosts of people, reducing car use and petrol bills.

Now the bikes can be borrowed for a week or two by folks thinking of switching to an electric bike.

One borrower who tried out the Tern said: “I absolutely love it - a brilliant bike and car replacement! I encouraged lots of people to try it out. They all loved it - without fail they all came back smiling. They couldn't quite believe how easy and fun it was to cycle.”

This Tern electric bike has plenty of space for this mum to give her daughter a ride on the back.

Help us and our movement explore and build a just transition from the ground up.

We’re recruiting a Just Transition Lead to make justice core to our project – recognising we can’t adequately tackle the environmental and climate crises without also addressing the inequality, exclusion and injustice in our world.

We want to play our part in unlocking the potential and power of communities to shape a just transition to a more equitable, more resilient, more inclusive future.

This is an exciting new, part-time, remote-working role – and we’d love you to help us find the right person to shape this important work. Find out more and apply: bit.ly/jtrolefb

It is not only possible... it's already being done.

Great piece on the Transition initiative the Liege Food Belt, 30 new food coops, 300 producers, 100 schools commiting to local, organic food, a market and House of Sustainable Food, a soup club feeding kids.

And it all came from a question - what change can we concretely effect within our lifetimes? What they arrived at was this: “That in 35 years, one generation, the majority of food consumed in the Liège region would be grown locally in the best ecological and social conditions.”

Well worth a read for you Mojday inspiration!

"Become community sufficient", rather than self sufficient...

With thanks to our friends at Community Roots Permaculture Project up in Bolton for their important edits!

Transition groups are focused on what we can do together, as communities, rather than what we do as individuals.

No matter how committed, energetic, well-informed we might be, to reimagine and rebuild our future, we need to work together; to consider everyone's needs, not just our own...

Plus, it's a lot more joyful and a lot less exhausting than trying to do it on your own. Join in!

TransitionTog, to Cambridge

A Transition shed has been shortlisted for the coveted #shedoftheyear award!

Built by volunteers over several months, with mostly reclaimed materials, it sits in the lush oasis of Transition Cambridge’s Empty Common Community Garden close to the centre of the city.

It's a place of peace for the volunteer gardeners and for local groups working towards a fairer, resilient and thriving community to use.

They call it the Head, Heart and Hands shed – amazing how just a few square metres of space can help bring people together and support local change...

Transition Together seed funding from the The National Lottery Community Fund helped to get the shed up and running. It’s got our vote – what about you?! https://www.readersheds.co.uk/share.cfm?shareshed=8284

#shed #transitiontown #communitygarden #communityaction #climatechange #cambridge

Volunteers use the shed to grab a drink in between community gardening sessions – here one of them collects three mugs of tea through the shed’s open window.
Using reclaimed materials meant the group had to be creative when they didn’t quite fit – like this donated bespoke window. The volunteers used colourful glass bottles to create a mosaic that filled the gap.
The shed in its surrounding community garden, make an oasis of calm and peace for folks working for community led change.

There hasn’t been any grocers in this town of 28,000 people for 15 years. Now a group of locals wants to change that by opening a community-owned greengrocers.

Working with local growers and food producers, it will create a permanent outlet where people can buy local food. Veg will be loose and they’ll stock local and heritage varieties.

Chris Dobbs is one of the suppliers they've lined up: “Over the years we’ve lost the connection between our local farms and our local households, but Carrick Greengrocers is going to tie those back together and get fresh food from farms into people’s homes. Being so close, I can get vegetables off the farm and into the grocers in 10 minutes.”

The project is giving people a chance to become co-owners and raising funds to open the business by June with community shares. If successful, it would be the first community-owned business in Carrickfergus, and the first community-owned greengrocers in Northern Ireland.

Find out more about their story here: https://carrickgreengrocers.org/ and watch their sweet video here: https://vimeo.com/822473545
