a confession: I’ve battled mourning doves for months, ever since I bought a bird feeder for my garden and they kept draining it in less than a day.

they are allegedly stupid creatures, but that’s just what they want us to think.

I am plausibly an expert in cyber defense, having written a book and academic papers, lectured at federal agencies and F500s alike — yet the doves thwart my every mitigation.

I planned to write a blog post once I won, but my hope for victory further desiccates daily…

i have been reworking some security bits and a friend got swept up in my sand traps. he's on iOS, isn't a techie, doesn't think he's using a VPN or using special security/privacy settings — but his traffic is coming from CDN addresses (akamai, cloudflare). something's going on that i didn't know about. can anyone point me to learning links?

@molly0xfff I love the hopefulness. Our species had a period of explosive population growth. As growth declines and we exit growth mode into what's next, optimism and creativity like this will be called for even as we learn what it's like to have fewer and fewer people with the skills and will to build, maintain, produce, and grow the stuff that we have taken for granted from the times when there was always more, more, more, and more people to make it and use it. If you've ever found yourself missing the "good old days" of the , what is it that you miss? (Interpret "it" broadly: specific websites? types of activities? feelings? etc.) And approximately when were those good old days?

@molly0xfff my first job out of college was in IT before the internet. We setup some Token Ring and Arcnet netwoks, then Novell. As gopher dimmed and www rose I was excited to get onto the Internet which required understanding how to install and configure the stack. Now I can't wait to get off the internet because it has become so hostile and aggressive in data gathering and behavioral control. The peak for me was closer to gopher than to certainly. I miss nerd civiliity.

@coreyspowell I'd say that since we claim to see an eclipse based on the point of view, being on the dark side of the earth counts as the earth eclipsing the sun which lots of people see every day.

@amcasari plus all the lights and ride like nobody sees me because they do not. How could they while looking at their phones at 40mph/kph? So many dozens of close calls.

High vis does seem to approve comprehension of gesture-based communication cyclist-to-driver post near miss, however.
