Question for the #BikeTooter community: I've been trying to switch from driving to bicycling, and keep wishing I had a rear view mirror (as a speeding SUV comes rushing past my left side...)... thoughts on mirrors for bicycles? Yay? Nay? If Yay, what kinds would you recommend?

In more random adventures in forced home remodeling: our Good: kitchen is wired for 220V! (apparently built in the 1970's war between electric and gas). Can put in an induction range/stove if we want!
Bad: HOLY CARP HAVE YOU LOOKED AT THE PRICES FOR INDUCTION RANGES/STOVES?!

I literally did buy WAG bags from REI for reasons... not sure if "excited" is the right word. (Yes, multiple layers of garbage bags + sawdust or kitty litter also would work...these are going in my car). Strangely, REI was cheaper than everywhere else, before the Fediverse accuses me of being bourgeois swine ;-)

Sigh, fixing a lousy attic hatch in the house and found a roof truss with termite damage. (though... not surprising, 60-80% of homes in Southern California have termite infestations, the last time I checked).

The most useful invention I've ever run across... Corsi-Rosenthal box.

I have used this so far for:

  1. Wildfire smoke
  2. COVID-19
  3. Bacon smoke (on Saturdays, LOL)
  4. General improvement of AQI
  5. Pet related allergies (hay and dander)
  6. Ragweed/pollen heavy days
  7. Dust from Santa Ana winds
  8. Dust from construction/remodeling
  9. Paint fumes (only partially useful, doesn't absorb gases, but helps somewhat) -- plus it sucks all the dust from the air, so it doesn't stick to your paint

(probably other uses, too...)

Hmm, apparently I am strange in that I got my flu and covid shots in the same arm? (everyone I have chatted with has put one in each arm). Btw, absolutely no side effects 4 days later, the only side effect was slightly sore injection site and a 1/2 hour of stuffy nose the first day.

ai6yr, to EPCOT

What does it mean when most of the plants featured at Epcot's "The Land" are in my backyard? (most being grown in hydroponics) 🤔

(I don't think I can get a floating water ride back there, though).

Okay, I have officially given up on trying to learn anything from the Idiot's Guide to To Throwing A Great Party. I have zero faith in any advice in there, since they recommended a "Minstrel Party" and singing Suwanee River for an ideal Memorial Day BBQ party. I'm thinking I don't care what you say is the faux pas of using an appetizer fork instead of a dessert fork is if you're busy recommending with a racist garden party in the backyard...

Interesting response (at least, what I interpret), when i teach Wilderness First Aid:

"This is a skill/information that might save someone's else's life": "Oh, cool!"
"This is a skill/information that might save your life":
Uneasy silence.
"This is something I've run across in the past.": "Wow, that's crazy!"
"This is something you might run across because climate change is making things much, much worse": Uneasy silence.

Interesting (to me) to realize over the last few years how much home canning currently relies on the modern, industrial supply chain (in terms of needing a supply of new lids for canning; they are not recommended for re-use). Were nearly impossible to get for several years due to the pandemic supply chain hiccups....

Random things I learned today.

  1. The local E-Bike dealer seemed hostile to me talking to them about e-bikes today, and I'm wondering if it's because I was wearing a bike helmet / jacket. Is there some natural animosity of e-bike people to non e-bike people? Or maybe they're just a grumpy person, naturally, LOL.

2, Ethernet punch down tools I have does not include a built in cable stripper, which is annoying.

LOL. This plumber does great work, but man, does he have opinions.

"You really should get rid of this s*** in your yard"

"Yeah, I know, we JUST HAD OUR ENTIRE HOUSE FLOODED OUT and we threw a bunch of stuff out there."

"Well, I'm not like you, I am always moving and working, I would have hauled that stuff away by now."

(Left him to his own devices so I don't need to hear any more... last time he called me a "slumlord")

Replaced a single pane, 1978-79 window with a very, very expensive modern equivalent. Why? Heatwaves. Lots of them in the future. Don't know how much it will help... but better than what was there before. #remodeling #windows
