For the past couple of weeks I've spent my evenings modding my Behringer RD-3.

It's a fun way to learn some basic #electronics

..and to get a cheaper Roland TB-303 ;)

Turned out pretty good and sounds even better!

Mods:

  • Lower cutoff
  • Hollow square
  • Filter overdrive deluxe
  • Rubber mod
  • Softer VCA attack
  • Higher resonance
  • PSU mod
  • Manual accent

I'll write a blog post about the process soon, but for now, here's an image

Update: SocaLabs went Linux (long ago) and I wasn't aware that this is actually old news. 🫣😝

That synth was subject of the KVR One Synth Challenge No. 176 and I am ridiculously proud that I made first place using Linux and FOSS exclusively.

Want to start a solo podcast about making art in general and electronic music production specifically.

I want to talk about the mindset / metacognitive aspects of making art because this stuff doesn't get talked about enough. I also want to talk about what it's been like moving my entire music production setup to Linux, as well as thoughts on various DAWs, synths, etc.

My hope is that posting about this will give me a little pressure to get going. Details forthcoming.

(Shown here with all visible messages selected.)

A big round of applause to Micah and Sol from our UX team for their awesome work on this, and to our community for your valuable feedback here and on our UX mailing list (https://thunderbird.topicbox.com/groups/ux).

The FSF @fsf just posted an interview with me about the role of community in free software projects:

Wait till they learn it's just me talking to 100 of my closest sock puppet accounts... 😸

In all seriousness, I'm looking forward to giving a keynote about this topic at LibrePlanet 2024 next week!

This may be the first time I've listened to @amadeus's album "2" all the way to the end. It's 2 and a half hours long!

Amazingly, the songs get better as the album goes on.

What do you think? How many active (s) are there in the world?

Reaper is every bit as popular as Bitwig and Ardour, and possibly more so in the Linux realm. I have doubts that metrics from just those two developers would give a clear enough picture as to the number of linux users. There are probably 20 DAWs available in the Linux world.

Along with the little oddball DAWs, there are big names, like Presonus, Bitwig, Harrison, and Cockos. Here is a list of just the most popular ones:

Completely mind boggling to me that we threw away 5 billion phones in 2022.

Some of those could have been repurposed: smartphones are hardly innovating any more. The most eco-friendly phone is the one you already have.

We need to publicly support communities like @postmarketOS who work on making these phones repurposable, and @gnome that work on making a polished mobile experience that serves people, not creepy corporations.

Added 8 from Sinevibes to now.

Will add the rest when they are ported as well.

These are really dope plugins, super kool that the developer is porting to Linux!

Manuel is working hard on a new version of Apostrophe! It's the long-awaited port to GTK4, Libadwaita, and the other awesome new stuff ✨

The new version is a significant overhaul, so testing and filing bugs is appreciated!

Install the beta by adding the Flathub Beta repo:

flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub-beta https://flathub.org/beta-repo/flathub-beta.flatpakrepo

And the install the app:

flatpak install flatpak-beta org.gnome.gitlab.somas.Apostrophe

Screenshot of an Apostrophe window with the new export dialog, which now uses an Adwaita SplitView layout.
