Helloooo fellow wonks - is there a particularly good article which speaks of the problem of too much ARIA and not enough semantic HTML for someone a little less clued up...?

sarajw,
@sarajw@front-end.social avatar

The background for this, is that I need to dig deeper into https://react-spectrum.adobe.com/react-aria/ and how it works - I'm a bit hesitant to suggest we use it, but maybe it's good, actually? Does anyone in here have experience of it?

I worry it'll abstract away the need to know your semantic HTML and when ARIA is and isn't needed.

But connected to this, I'm now in a conversation with a colleague who wants to know why superfluous ARIA is a problem - hence the article request.

What if the macOS dock and its icons were more dynamic and fluid?

Made a little demo that shows message previews, live music, download progress, and more.

Pretty happy with how this turned out!

"I don’t think [researchers] should scale this up more until they have understood whether they can control it.”

That’s according to Dr. Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneer in the world of AI who just resigned from Google so he can "speak freely."

His long-term worry is that future AI systems could threaten humanity as they learn unexpected behavior from vast amounts of data.

I ran a poll recently about making a separate account for Terminal Land posts, and there were enough people who thought that was a good idea that I went ahead and did it. If you’re interested, follow @terminal!

adam,
@adam@social.lol avatar

What is Terminal Land? It’s an ambitious multiplayer interactive fiction game that I’ve been working on (off-and-on) over the past three years. It’s still very rough, and remains a working prototype of the game engine (as opposed to an actual game), but I’m finally starting to get somewhere with it!

"doing it for the sake of doing it"

that pretty much encapsulates why I've been spending weeks on a styleguide for my personal omg.lol properties that means nothing to anyone and nobody will ever really use 🤷‍♀️

My number one tip for people is to boost more!

Discovery sucks on Mastodon, which is partially by design, but it also means it’s hard to find new and interesting people here. If you see something cool, reach for that boost button as well!

I want the new https://fediverse.info/explore/people People Directory to be easier to browse, so when you search or click on a topic that isn't popular you'll see a red X that you can click to remove.

Now I'm thinking about adding advanced filtering so you can hide results based on topics, domains and usernames.

Also considering adding Lists support so you can build and curate lists of accounts that are easily shareable.

Imma ship this before I get too carried away 😅

I don't blame Jack for Twitter/Musk, but if he had second thoughts he certainly could've said something before it was too late. Also if he turned against the deal, why did he roll over his shares instead of cash out?

Having spent a little time on Bluesky (leolaporte.me) I'm here to report that I'm sticking with Mastodon.

Too many people want Bluesky to replicate Twitter - and the outrage machine is already spinning up.

The ATProtocol is interesting - but I'm not sure it's significantly better than ActivityPub.

The homegrown feel here just feels better to me. More small town than big city. But I'll keep an eye on Bluesky. I'm not writing it off yet.

Discovered this underground garage/weird/punk rock label out of Belgium called Belly Button Records and there are SO MANY artists and albums on it (many are made by one dude, the owner) that I dig. It's so wild to see amazing garage rock is still out there being made.

I stumbled across the label via Instagram, strangely, a band called Plexi Stad who have an amazing new album called 'Probation Baby', and other awesome bands on the label are Mitraille, Moar (the guy who owns the label), Roda Lits, Warm Exit..

THEN Bandcamp suggests OTHER bands/artists I end up loving like Cereal Killer and Fruit Tones.

New, rough, raw, punky rock and roll via Belgium. Who knew. I'd been LOOKING for stuff like this. I always am.

Something for everyone:

Have an EPIC day whatever you have planned!

✨ Grifter-free Fediverse Discovery

I'm putting a fresh coat of paint on the https://fediverse.info/explore/people directory!

It's an opt-in directory of fediverse accounts based on bio hashtags, to join simply add the tag to your bio and follow the directions on the directory page.

I'm also building an API so @pixelfed and other projects can build discovery/profile recommendations.

Feedback and boosts appreciated 😁

The Mastodon centralists are coming out of the woodwork today with, “But it makes onboarding easier!”

So what?

The goal here isn’t to grow for the purpose of growth. Growth, in and of itself, is meaningless.

The goal is to decentralize social media.

mikestevens,

@andycarolan @atomicpoet that's a lot of creating new identities on those instances every time it happens. Until we have full portability, like taking your phone number to a different carrier, it's still going to be damn annoying to move instances. Importing follows and old posts just isn't enough on its own.

It’s that time again. Wanna try Bluesky?

jeff, to internet

A reminder: BlueSky isn’t decentralized until anybody can install a server and run their own node and communicate freely with every other BlueSky user.

Until then it’s just another Jack-associated social network.

    Welcome

If you are coming from Twitter, you understandably may feel like it is a lot quieter here. Mastodon is not "dead," but there is no bombarding you with stuff. Here you develop your own user experience by searching out and following people and things that interest you. You can pretty quickly build a much more satisfying experience, but it takes a little effort. Following is a good way to get started. Be patient and join in conversations.
