Estimated 28.5 million dead thus far during our ongoing pandemic (per Economist models)—including the near three quarter million dead in just the last 3 months—places it third among modern (through 20th century) epidemics:

⒈ 1918 Flu: est. 17-100 million

⒉ HIV/AIDS: 43 million to date (over 40+ years)

⒊ Covid-19: 28.5 million to date (over 4+ years)

⒋ Third Plague (Bubonic): 12-15 million (over 100+ years)

⒌ 1968 Flu: 1-4 million

⒍ 1957 Flu: 1-4 million

⒎ 1918 Russian Typhus: 2-3 million

Seeing a lot of "bad politics are due to covid brain damage" discourse today, including from those would want to believe ought know better.

Please stop.

The seeds for the orchard that is our current moment were planted well before even the SARS outbreak of 2002, like decades, if not centuries, before.

When our politics is fascists saying we have to support fascism to defeat the other fascists, please don't try to make sense of health supremacism by resorting to ableism.

It's not a good look.

OMFG!

Did I just see news that CDC not only acknowledged the "widespread recognition" of aerosol transmission, but actually told HICPAC—however bureaucratically—where to put their recommendation to weaken infection control procedures‽?!

Did we actually win a victory? However small?

Next you'll be telling me that HICPAC will be getting actual scientists and engineers to round out its membership...

"Hope is a discipline," Mariame Kaba tells us. It takes consistent work.

We're doing that work.

CDC talking to HICPAC of "widespread recognition" of "transmission by air" is what am talking about when speak of opposing fascism the other one-thousand four-hundred sixty days.

Only happened because folk actively did the work—not of pulling a lever for the guy whose CDC it is—but of demanding that HICPAC advice to weaken infection control procedures be rejected.

Not only was it rejected, but the CDC was forced to say WHY it was rejected.

Your. Ballot. Doesn't. Do. This. Work.

Only you can.

Big sign on the wall:

"The purpose of a system is what it does."
~ Stafford Beer

A system that generates misery is a system to generate misery.

Now, why would anyone want to generate misery?

Well, for starters, miserable people make for a great base upon which to build one's power.

In other news, where'd all these fascists come from?

Listening in, as my roommate participates in virtual seder hosted by Jewish Voices for Peace, as organizers, each introducing themselves by describing their physical appearance for blind participants, reminisce about struggling only years ago to figure out virtual community, as context for acknowledgement that covid is not over, that it still is not safe, then turn the mic over to the sign language interpreters, to likewise describe and introduce themselves.

This is what solidarity sounds like.

Just had occasion to walk through the single block Chelsea campus of FIT.

In addition to the usual heavy presence of campus security, there were easily a dozen NYPD standing around. Plus a police wagon parked on the corner, lights idly flashing.

Those in authority really are fucking terrified of students.

Hence preparing to launch wastewater dashboard for tracking spring and summer influenza surveillance...

To address absence of testing. Taking a page out of the handbook of better too-late-to-be-actionable data than no data.

Was encouraging to see greater faculty solidarity with student protesters following police action.

Now encouraging to see news of student protests for other grievances, in parallel with pro-Palestine protests.

News that those protests are also being met with force? Yep, that's the way solidarity on a mass scale happens.

Those in power escalate their overreaction so much that disparate groups come together in common cause.

The more protests, for the more reasons, the more police are stressed.

An friend of mine is looking for a boom-headset that addresses their sensory issues, including the feeling of ears getting too hot while wearing.

Have found one brand that says it addresses sensitivity to touch or pressure, but otherwise everything seems to be geared toward noise suppression without reference to other sensory modalities.

Basically, friend is looking to upgrade beyond earpods to something that won't immediately be icky to wear.

"The single-point focus on global temperatures as a proxy of human welfare in the face of climate change has structured the latter's science and politics. What has been erased in the process are the effects of changing climate on regional and local phenomena, such as the Indian monsoon, which are better captured through everyday life experiences. These experiences are arguably much more important in mobilising societal action than global proxies."

Sitting with the realization that many now use the phrase "the pandemic" in the same way that the term "capitalism" is bandied about:

As a hauntological signification, naming not an object in the world, with a history and a consequence, but rather gesturing over one's shoulder to the vague vicinity wherein spectres of that which one is unprepared to speak, unequipped to name, are commonly said to have been sighted.

beadsland,

Sitting now with the further realization that "a cold" has always been hauntological:

Referring not to any of hundreds of infectious types, but rather to the unwelcome unease of one's unwilling awareness of an inescapably bodily response to the unseen.

Not a disease but a discomfiture, a preference for absence of awareness of that which is absent from awareness.

No choice ever happens in a vacuum.

Every decision that has ever been made emerges of a history that long predates that decision ever being available, indeed ever being imaginable.

To posit that if folk were just given the right information—were somehow lifted from ignominious ignorance—they would come to correct and righteous choices, is to engage in fatuous Platonism.

When someone chooses harm, ain't because they don't know any better. They've already a whole lived life that got them here.

Stafford Beer tells us "The purpose of a system is what it does."

To say "This system makes fascists" is to speak to such purpose. Fascism is a choice, a choice that is made, and daily remade, in response to a system of incentives and sanctions one has been habituated to.

So long as those incentives and sanctions remain unchecked, indeed continue to be intensified, the result is determined: More folk choosing more fascism.

This is by design.

Unchallenged, continuing to intensify.
