@colin_mcmillen @bagder wait, you can dump the config without authentication of any kind, which includes the devices password hashes, and somehow you can just pass those hashes back to authenticate to the device?
No, that all tracks with the sophistication of this “fix”.

@cadey it’s possible to write C safely like it’s possible for observable size objects to quantum tunnel (teleport spontaneously): the math allows for it, but the likelihood is insanely low and gets lower the larger the thing is.

Here's a half-formed thought I need to mull a bit on:

Somehow, algorithmic (and especially "AI-driven") decision making tends to only be proposed in contexts where it can only — or mostly — affect those with the least power in the system.

Migrants and asylum seekers.
Prisoners.
Families using any form of state support (child benefits, foodstamps, etc).
Palestinians in Gaza.

It somehow never gets proposed for use-cases where it might affect the wealthy and powerful.

One wonders why. 🤔

@todrobbins @Meyerweb reminds me that automatically deleting emails is considered a corporate best practice. Reduces storage cost as well as cost of filtering and labeling data when you’re going through the discovery part of a legal case, and — not explicitly in the CISSP study material — reduces the likelihood of you being convicted for past crimes.

One thing that's wild to me is that we've gotten fairly solid at building distributed systems that are resilient, workable, and fairly decently designed... As soon as they hit a certain amount of scale, and only then.

So much shit out there just gets slapped together with every single cloud scale mega-cluster service and tool like its a limited edition box of candies that's going out of stock

Now, maybe you hate Sony. Maybe you hate Activision. There's plenty of good reason to hate both – they're run by creeps who do shitty things to gamers and to their employees. But if you think that Microsoft will be better once it eliminates its competition, then you have the attention span of a goldfish on Adderall.

Fun fact, my chosen nemeses for the last twenty years have been the Freemasons. Just because I’m put out they won’t let me join. I’ve devoted inordinate hours to finding and learning all their secrets people drunkenly admit to.

I'm sure this is true for many people, but I'm having the opposite experience, tbh. Coding (mostly) for myself, and taking a lot of care to make it long term maintainable, has been incredibly restorative for me. Keeping a code base tidy is so much more relaxing than constant tip toeing around a bunch of hazardous piles of legacy junk that you're not allowed to fix.

Mid-life “crisis”: as emphatically not-a-car-guy, I am possessed of a desire to build a car. This is facially absurd. I don’t possess the necessary skills, don’t have a garage to store a partially-constructed vehicle, and definitely don’t have the time or funds to spend on such a venture.
I’m not building a fiberglass facsimile of an ‘89 MR2. But I kinda want to. Maybe make the lines just a touch sharper - and the cabin a touch bigger to accommodate my height better…

Idle, delayed realization: transitioning to thinking of energy as unlimited/renewable and material as the limiting factor will require a serious change for petroleum refineries. Like, their whole operation uses material (crude oil) as both energy source and raw material for product. From the economic of a refinery owner, buying a whole lot of electricity to heat the fractionating column and cracking and reforming reactors instead of burning crude is just not going to be attractive.

Apple apologizes for iPad ad

“Creativity is in our DNA at Apple, and it’s incredibly important to us to design products that empower creatives all over the world,” said Tor Myhren, the company’s VP of marketing communications. “Our goal is to always celebrate the myriad of ways users express themselves and bring their ideas to life through iPad. We missed the mark with this video, and we’re sorry.”

Interestingly, Google used the same language to conclude its apology for its generative AI’s historical depictions of race. It explained its intention with flowery language and then said “But it’s missing the mark here”.

I wonder if we’ll be seeing more of this type of response to corporate tone-deafness (a generous term) going forward. Big “I’m sorry you feel that way (but this isn’t indicative of any problems with me)” vibes.
