Trauma is information. Someone who has experienced violence knows more about violence than someone who has always been safe. Someone who has a disability knows more about disability than someone who has always been able. I think about this whenever big criminal trials are in the news, that they weed out jurors who have been assaulted, violated, attacked, discriminated against, because they can't be "objective" about violence. I don't trust anyone who thinks inexperience is objectivity.

@WhiteCatTamer @DrSuzanne In Ellison v. Brady (1991), the fact that a woman who was stalked and harassed at work kept her cool, wrote everything down, presented records of the harassment to her employer, and asked for her harasser to be removed from the office rather than being relocated herself, was all used as evidence against her because she wasn't acting like a traumatized woman. A traumatized woman, according to the courts, is hysterical and unreliable. Not hysterical? Then she's a liar.

Trump is considering a rally in my neighborhood, the South Bronx.

I think he still thinks it's bombed out here with the buildings falling down?

Look at the photo the Post used to represent the south bronx LOL. It's the TRAIN YARD they wanted to show something dilapidated so badly. LAMO. Poor things.

I don't think he'll come. A beautiful working class hood full of black and brown people nah.

The Bronx is full wonderful people who don't like you at all.

Waking up to read the White House is deciding to ignore the statement of the young students protesting the government's need to feed genocide and for media outlets to call them "hate-filled foreign students" is the first loud bell of the covert fascist alignment domestically of the American project.

Biden's already opened claimed to be a Zionist so it shouldn't be too shocking but this is now a soft declaration of anti-dissent sentiment.

carrideen,
@carrideen@c18.masto.host avatar

@jalcine @nicol @mekkaokereke I think this is the reason masked infiltrators have been surrounding the Columbia campus. In a high-profile situation with a lot of inexperienced young protestors and several populations detested by right-wing extremists (Muslims, Jews, elite college students, professors), sowing discord by introducing hateful slogans is a win/win/win for their interests. I've watched it happen outside the uni gates--someone on a megaphone gets fed a line and it's chanted.

carrideen,
@carrideen@c18.masto.host avatar

@jalcine @nicol @mekkaokereke A dear Palestinian friend of mine in another country has been in protests for 50 years, and she said she spends most of her time at protests identifying and working to evict Nazi infiltrators. They are absolutely hanging around the Columbia gates. I don't think they are successful with the coalition of students inside the gates, but they're outside, faces wrapped up, screaming about rape and murder and hell.

Baby Reindeer on Netflix is super-intense, but all very recognizable to me as a bisexual who has loved many bisexuals. We are the sexual identity most likely to experience domestic violence, partner assault, and stalking, especially when we enter into relationships/friendships with monosexual people--and being bi and trans increases the risk.

It's definitely not for people who avoid representations of queerphobic violence. For people who have endured it, it may be cathartic and even healing.

carrideen,
@carrideen@c18.masto.host avatar

Twelve years ago, when I was teaching at Grinnell, the novelist Geronimo Johnson was visiting and we were talking about CWs, which were starting to become normal then. I told a story about how bad I'd felt after asking a student to watch Blue Velvet for an independent study, when he came back screaming at me "You don't know what it's like to be a young straight man!!" I don't.

Johnson looked me square in the eye and said, "You're a domestic violence survivor."

"How could you know that?"

....

carrideen,
@carrideen@c18.masto.host avatar

He said, "Because you don't even see that it's a movie about a woman being held captive and assaulted. That's just reality, not some new information."

I do still provide CWs in class, but now I realize they're just as much, if not mostly, for people for whom the reality of discriminatory violence is abstract or shocking news. So while I'd say Baby Reindeer is extremely violent and depicts horrifying experiences of bi and trans characters, it's with the additional note that it made me feel seen.

carrideen,
@carrideen@c18.masto.host avatar

It took me a long long time to realize that it wasn't just that I was a "drama magnet" or "addicted to chaos" or "had no boundaries"--all of which are used in the series to make the protagonist feel responsible for his abuse; my bi friends and I found ourselves in dangerous, coercive relationships with manipulative, violent people all the time. The same people who seemed soft, caring, and sweet would turn on us, make ultimatums, demand self-sacrifice, treat us like evil people. That's biphobia.

carrideen,
@carrideen@c18.masto.host avatar

Watching Baby Reindeer made me want to revive my periodic PSA:

If you are a bi person in a relationship with a monosexual person, please take care of your bi-ness. Don't try to hide or disappear for them, or fold yourself in, or stop yourself from giving voice to pain, or force yourself to go along with things that you are not comfortable with. Of course not every partner is abusive, but recognizing you are at higher risk can help you advocate for yourself, and stop blaming yourself.

Please tell Camilla happy 5th birthday today! She was born in an abandoned VW bug in Virginia, and rescued as a baby by a friend of mine. I knew the moment I saw her picture that she was our cat. We'd just watched Mulholland Drive, so I told @mxtiffanyleigh "This is the girl." (We named her after Camilla Rhodes, "the girl" in MD.) Aside from a scary bladder stone incident, she has brought nothing but love, laughter, and sweet silky snuggles into our lives.

What kind of high-school experience did you have? Were you in a clique? Were you popular, unpopular, the coolest kid in your Homeschool? Did you have a sweet jean jacket with patches, or maybe a leather vest? Were you an evil villain or a Mary Sue?

carrideen,
@carrideen@c18.masto.host avatar

@RickiTarr After being brutally bullied and isolated in elementary and middle school, I became weirdly beloved in high school, surrounded by artistic, funny, brilliant, earnest friends, dozens of people whom I still admire deeply. I'm among the less notable of several PhDs from my class, but my friends in business, politics (local through international), agriculture, and advocacy amaze me. We went to public high school in Kansas; there was just something in the water that year.

carrideen,
@carrideen@c18.masto.host avatar

@RickiTarr Fashion-wise, I experimented with a lot of skater grunge and neo-disco looks. I had huge hair down to my ass that I could make into big heavy metal music video hair or iron flat into Nico styles. I found out at one point that I was on the campus cop's shit list as a leftist rabble-rouser, likely on drugs, so I tormented him mercilessly, baiting him to do something about it.

I love thinking I have a good brain and then remembering that I am very cautious about how I take out the trash because I feel somehow my neighbors are monitoring me and going "hmm, that's too much trash" or "hmm, what's he doing taking trash out this time of morning/day/night, must be hiding something" or w/e like coming up with nicknames for me like "oh there's Trash Guy, he's always carrying trash to and fro" or something

carrideen,
@carrideen@c18.masto.host avatar

@taber I do not miss having a house with curb trash for this reason. Are people looking to see if I'm taking out trash in pajamas? Do they think I have a suspicious amount of bottles and cans? How can I make clear that I didn't take out recycling for a few weeks, and had a party?

carrideen,

@inquiline One of the things I'm working hard on with my first-year students is how to disagree with someone without calling them "ridiculous," "childish," or "insane." Is this what the internet did to us? It's appalling.

carrideen,
@carrideen@c18.masto.host avatar

@inquiline I don't think it's just men doing it, but it's almost always women receiving it. I want to bring back good old vanilla disagreement. One doesn't need to denounce or incite violence against or discredit the rationality of another person to have a different idea, right? In my class, an essay we read brought up UBI as an off-handed example of something, and suddenly my students are accusing the author of madness, infantilism, raving delusions. You just disagree. He's not ill.

Yesterday I saw a mutual’s post where they said ‘a man stuck out his leg and made my female friend who was running, fall’ and even said ‘please don’t not all men at me’ and then the worst ‘not all men trip women who run’ conversation ensued, and that particular person said sexism against men is a form of racism
