“What is ownership?” @molly0xfff asks some fantastic questions and points out that “ownership” means different things to different people. This is a must read.

Crawford Kilian: My only criticism of vaccines is that they tend to induce amnesia in the vaccinated. After a healthy generation or two, vaccines begin to seem optional. Then the diseases they protect against come right back.

Hey, people. Foone Turing (the "I go way too deep into computer investigations of vintage tech" person) has indicated they're officially laid off, and running out of money while trying to find a new job. If you have a job, hit them up. Otherwise, please throw some dollars:

First, let me say that I have massive respect for Lori Gottlieb, but I'm having trouble with the cognitive dissonance of her 2012 book "Marry him: the case for settling for Mr. Good Enough", and then.. this: https://www.onceuponabebe.com/2022/01/single-mama-spotlight-lori-gottlieb.html where she clearly states "single by choice" circa 2022. I'm like.. if someone this sophisticated, a literal therapist with incredible emotional intelligence who has written great books on this very topic (and btw quite attractive), can't find a life partner, the rest of us are sooo fucked?!

@codinghorror @dave_cochran True human connection is worth it. I had to come close to literally ceasing to be to appreciate it fully. Human connection is worth it. It’s our entire reason for existing. Everything else is window dressing. So yes, keep at it and open yourself up again and again and again. Find the right people for you. Try dancing, something like Biodanza. I’m serious. That’s where I first found great people after half a lifetime of frustration, hurt, isolation and loneliness.

I am currently seeking Low Quality Friends. It's a lot like a regular friendship, except I will never:

-call you.
-text and say "are you free this day?" without providing any additional context, putting you in an uncomfortable situation.
-tell you that I am moving and heavily hint that I would like you to carry heavy boxes and heavier furniture out of my apartment.

In conclusion, it's the ideal friendship. Apply here:

While clearing up my late mother’s house, I came across some historically significant newspapers that she had stored in a cedar chest more than fifty years ago. Rather than leaving them sitting in a drawer at my place, I’m trying to think how they might be put to good use in some kind of educational program, or displayed where people could see them. The Toronto Archives were not interested, and the museum library has not yet responded to my query. Ideas are welcome!

The biggest problems we deal with in software product development:

  1. Misunderstanding the problem, typically due to problem-solvers working through too many intermediaries

  2. Working too long without getting feedback. This is a form of over-optimism. Also known as "going dark".

  3. Overwhelming complexity. Systems start simple and eventually turn into large, incomprehensible messes. This is worse without ongoing correction.

I don't know if you've read this yet (not the book, the review) but it is an absolute masterpiece of how to deliver a completely devastating, but cordial and factual, takedown. Honestly, the last takedown I saw this powerful was Susan Fowler's blog post on Uber.
