When generative AI is trained with AI-generated data, it becomes degenerat(iv)e AI.

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@tomcom @metin @tomcom @metin This was a joke about the fact that generative AI actually degenerates when trained on AI-generated training images. This is because AI-generated images tend to have defects and other artifacts.

For example, AI sometimes creates hands with too many fingers. If you train an AI on such images, it learns that it is normal for hands to have any number of fingers and the problem increases.

Started a new MagicaCSG 3D scene. As usual, I'll keep you up to date of the progress again.

A coffee is always appreciated. ☕😉

@metin Looks good so far! I also like the former shape of the body, which seems to be a good template to create lots of other characters around a campfire 😁

Out of curiosity: This doesn't look like a normal bear to me, more like an ant-bear. They typically have such an elongated head and longer claws for digging. Is that what you were going for? Otherwise I would expect more of a "peach + yoghurt pot" head, if you know what I mean 😅

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin I see, as always I'm excited to see the result 🙂

Started a new MagicaCSG project. This time I chose to assign colors and materials early on, instead of focusing solely on modeling in a single clay-like color first.

More WIP impressions will follow soon, as usual.

@metin It looks so nice and clean, great work!

@metin I really like the background, but the edge on the front "ring" seems a bit too sharp. Still, great composition and colors! 🙂

@metin Indeed!

Hm, now I want to watch this show again 😏

For years now, I've been collecting images related to retro-tech on Pinterest, divided in various subcategories.

You're invited, although you need to be logged in at Pinterest to be able to open the detailed images.

@metin I think I can see everything without being logged in. I can even click on the images to enlarge them 👍

@metin Your C64 collection seems to be the largest with almost 400 items. I can scroll all the way down. However, I have to log in to see the images in full resolution.

Stylized 3D illustration for the Dutch ComputerTotaal magazine, about internet movie rental (many years before streaming services were introduced).

Some of my favorite films are on the screens. Do you recognize them all? They can be found in my all-time favorite movies list:

daniel,

@metin Nice illustration and interesting list! 🙂

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin Definitely! Lots of the classics (Back to the Future, Halloween, Alien, Seven, Taxi Driver, etc). To my shame, I have to admit that I've never seen Das Boot, even though it's one of the most famous films ever made in Germany 🙈.

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin Oh, this is cool, you have reviews for all these films (or even more) 😮

You write that the experience survived the test of time. This is good to hear, as I struggle with older films that have not aged well. I think either brilliant films with good dialogue (like I imagine Das Boot) or over-the-top silly films and CGI (like Robocop 😂) still work for me.

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin Have you seen the new adaptation? I have not, but I would be interested in a comparison. I agree that the themes in the old film are visionary, while the presentation is caricatural and charming. But that is something that is rather rare in the modern blockbuster film industry.

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin Same for me. Off the top of my head, I can't think of a remake that's better than the original (which I've also seen).

Another rule of mine: Sequels are usually worse than the original. I assume you agree with this, as I don't see many sequels in your list 😅

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin I'm not entirely sure I agree about Terminator 1 and 2. But it's been a very long time since I've seen them, so maybe my memory is flawed 🙈

I did see The Thing (2011) in the cinema, and it certainly wasn't good 😅 (I haven't seen the old remake yet.)

mihailim, to random

@metin @tomcapuder It indeed is a theory, but I have grave reservations about calling it a scientific theory. It's testable only if we're prepared to wait until the literal end of time. Not what I'd call scientific.

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin What happens when you observe a quantum state?

(1) The Copenhagen interpretation says that the wave function collapses into a classical state and that is it. An example of this view is Schrödinger's cat.

(2) The Everett interpretation says that there is no collapse, but a branching of different possibilities, one of which we observe. An example of this view is Wigner's friend [1].

[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wigner%27s_friend

2/3 🧵

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin The second interpretation, later called the "many-worlds interpretation", led to theories of parallel universes, not only in scifi but also in physics.

I could go on about its intricacies and the cool research that followed. But the important thing is that we do not know which view is correct, since both of them lead to the same observations.

Btw, Hugh Everett did not share this "many-worlds" view and commented on it with the word "bullshit" [2].

When I was a youngster in the late 1980s, I formed an Amiga game dev team with 2 friends.

Before making games, we started by trying to sell game music that used minimal RAM, made with our music editor SIDmon.

To promote our game music, this energetic music module was composed by our musician Ramon Braumuller. The file, including tiny sampled sounds, is only 22 kilobytes.

Check the #TeamHoi hashtag for more tunes.

@metin What a great song! I like the laid-back feel and the funky base.

The moment the guitar kicks in reminds me of the beginning of Search and Destroy [1]. Not so much the notes themselves, but the energy behind it. The guitar solo has a nice bluesy feel to it, which is a good contrast to the happy feeling at the beginning of the song 🙂
