From the mid-2000s to the mid-2010s, I was a daily and weekly news cartoonist for the Dutch NU.nl site and the Dutch NRC(.next) newspaper.

I chose 3D graphics as the medium, because it was novel for news cartoons, and it allowed me to build a library of reusable characters, props and decors.

Back then I worked with 3ds Max, and rendered with V-Ray.

One suggestion, though: The pizza topping looks a bit too glossy in my opinion. The cheese and salami should have a richer yellow and red color, respectively.

Speaking of failures in the last post, I decided so share one of those with you.
As you can see, this image appears to be pretty fine, right? And that's true, expect the sword the knight is holding. It is a bit bent, something the blade of a longsword should not be.

So, is here someone working with , or something else? How could this blade be straightened again without destroying the picture itself?

In 2010 I created a cover for the Dutch MacFan paper magazine, featuring a / style bust of Steve Jobs (who was alive back then).

Just for fun, I decided to add a of the bust to my Shapeways shop, and it was sold a few times.

Shapeways liked it so much, they used the model to promote their full-color sandstone material.

But the fun ended when Shapeways informed me they received a legal letter from , summoning them to remove my Steve. 😆

In 1993 our game and demo dev team traveled to "The Party" in Denmark. It was a large-scale computer user event, like the LAN parties that followed later. Visitors were mostly creatives, trying to finish a demo for the demo competition.

We worked all night long, but didn't manage to finish our demo submission (the Hoi sAGA III) in time, but I still love to listen to Jogeir Liljedahl's music for one of the winning demos: Full Moon by Fairlight / Virtual Dreams.

    I figured to write a little thread, sharing what helps me to decrease anxiety, depression and OCD…

    • Take time for daily outdoor walks or other exercise. This helps your brain to process and solve things, and increase white matter.

    • Eat healthy. No hard-to-digest food, heavily processed food, sugary stuff, etcetera. Your gut is intricately connected to your brain via the nervous system and gut bacteria. "You are what you eat."

    Thanks for sharing. This is some important advice for health care and well-being in general!

    When it comes to dealing with , the most important things for me are routines and goals. Routines, once established, require little to no thought or motivation, but they will keep you going until you can motivate yourself to pursue your goals.

    @vl_tone @metin @BartV I think adding back some of the grain is a good idea. I would also darken the birthmarks (some of them are still there, e.g. on her right cheek) and add back the moles manually (e.g. on her neck). Then you will certainly be her favourite son-in-law forever 😁

    @Illuminatus @metin I have not read the book, but given this review, I cannot understand your criticism of what is said about evolution. The author understands the "classical views of evolution" as the idea that tiny random changes in genes are the sole drivers of evolution. However, if organisms are robust to most such changes, this may not be the whole truth. From a scientific point of view, there is nothing wrong with this statement?

Still not an issue for me, especially since this seems to be a popular science-oriented book. However, I have not read it, so you may be right. Never judge a book by it's cover (or a cover article), right? 😅

    Started a new scene. I love that 3D editor so much. The SDF (Signed Distance Fields) approach gives you total modeling freedom, without worrying about polygon structures, edge flow, etc..

    The screenshot shows part of a snake-like alien, existing of two curves. The mouth curve is Boolean-subtracted in real-time, including auto-filleted edges everywhere.

    @metin Thanks for the tips! I have some free HDRI packs lying around, but it is rather hard to find good ones in them. Maybe I will invest in a versatile professional pack.

    Whenever I try to use invisible light sources, I get these sharp edges on the light reflections. Is there a way to make them softer on, let's say, metallic surfaces?
