Carbon capture is a waste of money and essentially a scam. Reducing emission production in the first place should be the focus.

Syphilis increasingly displaying severe symptoms

“Cases of infant syphilis have been soaring recently in the United States. Earlier this month, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) urged syphilis screening for all pregnant women.”

With Saskatchewan having one of the highest increases in Canada, screening would be important here too.

Alberta’s Secret Pandemic Study Is Led by COVID Restrictions’ Critic

“this is a more serious effort to gin up research supporting conclusions the government has already reached, since the report is clearly intended to appear to be a legitimate study. Then again, this kind of thing happens all the time with research by economic “think tanks,” so really all that’s new is it’s being extended to medical research. “

A damning finding but not surprising. failed citizens.

“Newly obtained internal data shows the Saskatchewan government knew COVID-19 was spreading at an "exponential" rate in the fall of 2021, providing new insight into what officials knew before a devastating COVID-19 wave hit the province…days before the provincial government publicly declined to re-introduce measures doctors said were urgently needed to stop the spread of the virus.“

Fetal personhood rulings could nullify a pregnant patient's wishes for end-of-life care
“Recent abortion and IVF cases have highlighted the constantly changing landscape of medical decision-making and what that means for medical care. Given this shifting terrain, it is impossible to predict with any degree of certainty how a pregnant person’s end-of-life care directives will be interpreted”

Just finished watching 20 Days in Mariupol. This is a shocking but must watch documentary showing the war crimes of Russia and the suffering of Ukrainians. How can Republicans in the USA and some Conservatives in Canada try to stall financial aid and thus deliberately assist Russia by not supporting Ukraine?

Challenges in Academia

A pointed article about what is going wrong, in part, with academia.

“The growth of managerial and administrative grades responsible more and more for controlling academics rather than supporting them is one of the most important trends in the modern university. That structure emits a constant white noise and static of demands that don’t seem connected to lecturers’ training or aims”

@AskPippa If you mean antibiotic resistant bacteria perhaps this could be useful? There are links at the bottom of the article as well.

Pollievre listen to experts? You have got to be kidding me.

“The economists pushed back on assertions the carbon price has driven up the cost of living, and called out opponents for failing to pitch a less costly alternative to reduce emissions.
"And they certainly aren't offering any alternatives that would reduce emissions at the same low cost as carbon pricing," read the open letter, which had garnered 213 signatures as of Wednesday afternoon.”

Eminence vs Evidence-based medicine

This is a good piece.
“Today we have a whole new breed of physicians whose eminence is due more to their media exposure than their accomplishments. The likes of Mehmet Oz, Deepak Chopra, Steven Gundry, Joseph Mercola and Christiane Northrup have become mega-influencers and continually use their eminence to upset the evidence-loaded cart.”

As severe Alberta drought looms, fracking consumes huge volumes of water — forever
“Although the oilsands consume the vast majority of all water used by the oil and gas industry in Alberta, fracking has grown ever-thirstier over the past decade — and the water it uses is gone from the water cycle for good.”

Red Deer Catholic directive would restrict LGBTQ+ conversations in schools

“teachers at Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools were given a directive that would require them to out students to administrators, remove Pride materials and force teachers to only refer to students by their legal names”

COVID vaccination mandates and personal freedoms.

“The problem with the personal freedom argument was that there was nothing personal about getting a COVID vaccine. First, people who had been vaccinated shed less infectious virus when they get COVID compared with those who hadn’t been vaccinated. Second, people who had been vaccinated were less likely to transmit the virus to others.

dmacphee,
@dmacphee@mas.to avatar

“By mandating vaccines during the COVID pandemic, we inadvertently leaned into a libertarian left hook…“One day we’re going to have a really bad global crisis and a pandemic far worse than COVID, and we’ll look to the government to protect us, but it’ll have its hands behind its back and a blindfold on,” said Lawrence Gostin, director of Georgetown University’s O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law. “We’ll die with our rights on—we want liberty, but we don’t want protection.”
