@SirTapTap -something-something-punchline: "naked buns".

It's a sleepy Taco Tuesday afternoon here, and this wasn't one of the 25 jokes ChatGPT knows, so you'll have to bootstrap the rest of the joke yourselves...

Another thing we're not too honest about is the very expensive nature of decentralized. A FREE Facebook group can have millions of members. A mastodon server with 30,000 members can, depending on admin skills, cost from $500 to $2000 a month. And yes, donations cover that on some sites, but hardly all, and even supporting them can and often is a full time job. Big tech has us by the shorties in this respect. They have almost limitless capacity.

@drimplausible@mastodon.online avatar

@shoq Free isn't "free" though. FB operates via Commodifying that Audience along relatively traditional (ie Mass Media) lines, and then exploiting that in ways MM never dreamed of through their analytics tools and data mining.

@Radical_EgoCom I try and balance any bits of wisdom I may have to offer with memes and Not quite the Full Diogenes, but then who is?

I'm gonna try to clear up a few things

Meta is not gonna buy Mastodon or any server, this is based on absolutely nothing and untrue.

Yes, some of us indeed got contacted by Meta/Insta because they are working on a new social platform (this was in the news) and they are looking into joining the Fediverse (Mark Zuckerberg also told this in the recent podcast)

SO.

This contact was about a "heads-up" for a potential big platform to join the network and not for a "take over".

@serklarvel @stux
How would they know?
How would the average user, scrolling on a Meta-Fedi feed, seeing a flow of the usual FB screeds, IG pics, algorithmically tweaked correct amount of ads, and whatever post from the broader Fediverse that goes viral enough to squeak through the filter, be able to tell that things operate differently here?

On the subject of meta federating:

If it happens I'm going to need a second fediverse identity—one on an instance that is explicitly defederated from Zuckerberg's empire, to use for socializing with friends, and one that I will use only to broadcast ads for my work into Facebook-controlled territory.

(Because I need to market my work, but I don't shit where I eat.)

@JamesGleick @cstross What was Usenet like post September 1993? Would that experience serve as a baseline?

I suspect the ideal size of an server to be around 100-200 people. It’s very possible to scale way past that size, though it becomes exponentially harder to do in a responsible & calm manner with every 10x 100x 1000x multiplier of co-tenants.

Let’s not fight our current state of evolution as a tribally oriented species. We don’t make very good hive-minds of our collective consciousnesses yet, but the glue of the will get us there eventually.

drimplausible,
@drimplausible@mastodon.online avatar

@erlend You may well be right. It's interesting that this mirrors what happens behind the scenes with the algo: an initial push to 200 or folks, a mix of followers and genpop, followed by successive pushes based on engagement (or mod's thumbs on the "heat" button).

So the question becomes: how active do those users on an server need to be?

drimplausible,

@ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon Yes, exactly. I cribbed from the excellent Jack Womack in his afterword to the reissue of that "the gold of imagination might be transmuted into silicon reality" (Womack. 2004) in my MA work.

Michael Abrash confirmed they were inspired by Snow Crash in /Masters of Doom/.

Everything I've seen in the intervening 15 years has confirmed the process. There's variance, to be sure.

But the inspiration is there.

My doctor told me to adjust me diet and I don’t really know how… I don’t eat processed stuff really. My version of a snack is berries or an avocado. I like to cook salmon, and I air fry all the things, the “unhealthiest” thing I make is a hamburger when I am needing a quick meal and some fries I made myself. The worst I have in terms of snacks is a little ice cream, I allow myself one ginger beer per day and mostly drink sparkling water I make mixed with pure cranberry juice. Wtf do I change lol

drimplausible,
@drimplausible@mastodon.online avatar

@chiefgyk3d adjusting a diet is always a goal-oriented process though. The ask is "whatcha trying to fix, doc?" I can't tweak the inputs til they let me know what the expected outcome is.

I'm collecting about and the . Some findings include:

  • people really care about image descriptions (and that's awesome!)
  • most of us are in the fediverse, some are on it
  • you might want to be careful with boosting your own posts
