With looming introduction of and the subsequent integration with the I thought a quick summary of a key piece of literature is in order. Likely too late, but perhaps not.

Basically, what is or business model?

The production of the

🧵

(This is from 1977, by Dallas W. Smythe, so some of it may seem obvious in retrospect. Please read it through.)

(Also I'm posting as I go, so it might take a bit).

drimplausible,
@drimplausible@mastodon.online avatar

/2 So what is the question Smythe is trying to answer when it comes to the ?

Basically, "what economic functions for capital do mass systems serve?"

(And and both fit in with the mass in mass communications here).

I'm order to figure out this function, you need to figure out what the commodity they produce actually is.

You might think you know the whole "if you're not paying, you're the product" line.

This is part of that.

🧵

drimplausible,
@drimplausible@mastodon.online avatar

3/ Now if you're asked "what does media produce" you might answer something like content or information or messages or entertainment.

This is understandable. This is what it looks like they do. You're forgiven if you thought that's how it worked

This is the trad, orthodox, "idealist" POV.

This is held by everyone from to to to

So there's a lot of press on this idea.

Smythe's argument is that it misses the point.

    Here’s what The Counteroffensive is reading today:

    Victoria Amelina has died following injuries sustained during the Kramatorsk restaurant attack.

    She was one of Ukraine's brightest novelists, and had been covering war crimes committed by Russia.

    Why do people think so highly of Jack just because he made he can’t even openly admit Elon is messing up and all of us see it, and he should know better than anyone else. He’s trying to make a new app as well. Twitter also wasn’t that much better under Jack, it had a lot of its own issues which Elon made worse. I’m not sure why people think is going to be much better or different. I’m there and it’s not that great and has moderation issues as you can see.

    Bluesky moderated a user for merely saying, “shut up cracker”

    drimplausible,

    @chiefgyk3d "Founder Bias" is a problem, but that's more of an internal one, impacting Jack's perspective.

    The rest of us are still dealing with the fallout from Thomas Carlyle's pernicious meme.

    I like Mastodon because -- it promises independence from bigco silos run by megalomaniac billionaires hell-bent on conquering everything. I just want to play with my friends. I'm into working together not world domination. Been there, done that, found it boring and lonely.

    drimplausible,
    @drimplausible@mastodon.online avatar

    @davew It tends to be "locally boring" until you can hit a critical mass of interesting feeds and consistent posters.

    Even following a couple bot accounts can help, but just be actively engaged in following anything that fits your fancy

If you’re interested in running your own server I personally use @mastohost for managing my service, simple to setup and pay them, been using them for months and it’s cheaper than Twitter blue for many individuals, but inexpensively can scale if you become more popular as I have been. Enjoy your time tooting posts away

    @chiefgyk3d Pretty good analogy with the cultivation. My feed started out as "locally boring", and a little cultivation has started to make it less so.

    I'm still missing the Firehose, so I'm looking for a way to connect that and turn that on.

    I still desire more "unknown unknowns"...

    I cannae draw.

    It's always bothered me that I can't draw. I have dyspraxia pretty bad and was the crappiest artist in my whole year at school, and I kinda shrugged and went "Guess I'll write instead" and just sort of bimbled through life making text adventures and fixing coin-ops, but it's always nagged at me that I can't draw, and my kid's been asking me "Dad how do you draw a cat" and I'm like "You're six and you already draw better than me," and I'm 40 now and wanna put some time in this year towards not sucking quite so much at this.

    Anyone got a rec for a good absolute-beginner guide? Like, sub-beginner even, think Small Child Level because I wasn't kidding when I said my 6-year-old draws better than me

    The thing that's incredible to me is just how cheap this all is, how inexpensive Alito and Thomas have turned out to be.

    To a billionaire the sums involved are basically nothing at all. They're buying off supreme court justices for shake-out-the-couch money.

    @mhoye There was a blog post back in the day (pre-twitter? Bush-era?), by @cstross or @pluralistic or perhaps someone else (I don't want to mis-attribute it here, but I can no longer find the link) doing some back-of-the-envelope calculations of how much it would cost to cover the wages of every judge, state, and country official at every level in the United States.

    ISTR it was a lot, of course, but less than you'd think. Somewhere north of $7B.
