Why is AI research so much sexier than education research? Sure it’s cool to study how machines learn but wait until you hear about PEOPLE.

What if AI really is taking over, but instead of grand wars or job losses, it’s just control via weird spellcheck corrections, re-directions of non-junk-mail into the junk folder so it’s unseen, failure to let us into rooms we have access to and other similar interventions? What if it’s just sneaking round the back, cunningly disguised as the basic incompetence that we’re all entirely resigned to? There’s so much of that about that surely it’s the perfect camouflage.

And, in general, I think there's more than a whiff of / around music gear and software that ease of use is equated with being non-pro or somehow kiddified.

No.

Music gear needs to get out of the way of the artists using it. We have ideas in our heads we want to realise, we haven't come to worship at your temple of arbitrary inconvenience.

I HATE all this macho bullshit. I want music creation to be FAR more accessible in every way.

@composergreg @Jyoti @mr_daemon FWIW, I find TikTok and the short form focus there more useful in this regard.

"I press this button and make this sound..." (IYKYK)

You can get rid of the filler pumping up the length, and then get right to it.

Might not work for everything, obvs, but it can adapt quickly too.

@jeffjarvis Oh nice! We have a whole chapter on Elizabeth Eisenstein! (Chapter 16).

"She cared much more about the use of the technology than the technology itself... eventually, we will understand [the story of the internet] better as the story of society's use of it." (Jarvis, 2023, p. 133).

Yeah, definitely. It feels difficult to describe the waters of the digital ocean from the POV of a cybernetic fish, but sometimes, sometimes, I feel like this is knowable in the here and now.

This is probably obvious to many, but:

Threads, by fully centering algorithmically chosen content and making blocking slightly more of a hassle, has committed to rewarding heavy virality, and facilitating celebrity (both existing and attempted).

And it's tilted towards the most popular users of Instagram. Who may not be well practiced at a short-text medium, but they'll learn fast.

What kind of atmosphere do you THINK it'll have in a month or two?

My bet: Reality TV, the social network.

A lot has been made of a de-aged Harrison Ford in “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” After all, Ford, 80, first portrayed the whip-cracking hero in 1981. “We knew we would have to use all of the tools we already had and develop some new ones,” said Andrew Whitehurst, the film’s visual effects supervisor. @CultureDesk There's a vibe to it; the notion that "stars", will be once again tied to a studio system, and upon signing the Contract, they realize that they've agreed to be filmed, continually, as they age, but that the images used for any film they are in may be drawn from any point along their life, algorithmically enhanced to suit the whims of the Director, the Studio, or :shudder: Test Audiences.

1/ So I have a question because I keep seeing a lot of fear mongering regarding Meta even on my own TikTok’s. What information do you perceive meta to be able to take from your to the point you want to defederate? How is any of that data you are already publishing on ActivityPub and already making public on a server really that private? Because honestly it feels similar to how people get upset that you can film a building in public when you’re on the sidewalk.

    drimplausible,
    @drimplausible@mastodon.online avatar

@chiefgyk3d It's not one thing, per se, but it's a lot of little things, and given the past (and current?) practices of the company with respect to data, it's how they'd use that information in the aggregate to build a profile on you.

    A) Principally, and traditionally, it's the owners of Tv and radio stations, and newspaper and magazine publishers. You can add most web platforms to this nowadays.
