At some point, all these articles analysing LLMs by comparison to this or that prior tech will force me to write a post on how to use E.F. Schumacher’s framework of convergent vs divergent problems as a lens to analyse tech and with that I’ll alienate every non-academic reader I have for good 😝

econoprof,

@baldur Wait, do I have to go back and re-read Small is Beautiful before getting on the list?

People are emailing me wanting "genealogy information" from the 1960s. It's like honey, I can help you with the 1760s or the 1860s. I was born in the 1960s and there are no censuses publicly available yet, even. Stop making me feel like a fossil.
@librarians #genealogy #librarian

econoprof,

@jillrhudy @librarians when my uncles started excavating our roots and dragged me with them, I was delighted to learn that state governments in US and local libraries sometimes had birth and death records that were decades away from census reveal.

Hmm, "borrowed" a DVD I wanted to watch from a Little Free Library I was walking by with the dog today. (the LA Times just called them a "sign of gentrification" -- although, arguably, this neighborhood was already, by definition, gentrified).

econoprof,

@ai6yr @LPerry2 They never heard of heat island effect, i guess, and its impact on cooling costs of home.

Hello ! I am making the jump from X to here. Too many of my and buddies left X. If you switched from X, how do you like it here?

econoprof,

@ScienceGirl Twitter became like the tabloids that used to be at the grocery store check out, avert your eyes and block-block-block, and Mastodon is more like having a conversation with a neighbor you met saw at the Meetup group for your hobby or fandom, and are chatting with them in the grocery line.

However, ymmv and depends on the instance you land on, the admins and mods running the show, your willingness to futz with buggy apps sometimes, & getting back in practice at kind interactions.

econoprof,

@ScienceGirl put a nice long pinned intro post, don’t rely just on search (which is relatively new and not universal) but use hashtags liberally, and provide alt text for any images you post. These were the first lessons i learned when i started using my stashed account here last year. Also, people interact more with their followers and follows here. Find and follow some people who aren’t like you, and they’ll lead you to other interesting folks. Welcome.

Why can’t authors write as fast as I can read the books and I have to wait years for new books in a series… I need to speak to the manager

econoprof,

@thomasfuchs but it is such a joy to discover a great new to me series that has many books in print!

Got my booster and flu shots before dinner today, and then went for dinner in The Castro.

Now, my arm hurts a lot, but I'm not super sleepy yet. Vaccines tend to knock me out.

I'd be doing this anyway, but I wanted to make sure I was fully boosted before the Maker Faire.

econoprof,

@kristinHenry flu arm hurt over a wider area than covid arm did. Weird.

econoprof,

@kristinHenry haven’t done multiples since Navy. The clerk asked if I wanted any others. I just laughed. They are pushing four as the max. Four is not good for me, at all.

econoprof,

@kristinHenry get that jab! Had shingles before the vaccines for it. Misery.

econoprof,

@kristinHenry but would not want to combine those three!

Ps loved the prints. Ty for speedy delivery!

econoprof,

@kristinHenry please don’t. I have enough!

With oceans/seas becoming much warmer, when does fish eating become problematic?

econoprof,

@StillIRise1963 depends on the fish, its fishery location, how it’s caught and packed, and the cost to ship. And mercury and PCBs and PFAS and plastic contamination.

I’d love to find a clear decisionmaking tool. I’ve tried an app before but it wasn’t comprehensive or up to date.

I'm really mad at several college professors in the CS department at my undergrad who told us all "self driving cars are coming" and trusting them as authorities I quashed my many qualms and wasted a lot of time in otherwise important conversations about urban planning insisting that we account for the impact of this 'inevitable' variable.

"They will be safer than human drivers." tapped into my confirmation bias ... I hate drivers, after all. Of course every one could be bested by a machine. 1/

econoprof,

@futurebird do they have to take the state drivers’ test? And pass the written exam? Parallel park between cones while the examiner makes hostile notes? Distinguish between signs that are uncommon and out of context? Yield to emergency vehicles? If not, why not?

I have a new short story in
Clarkesworld Magazine called "Stones". I rarely write “Just needed to get it out of my system” short stories, but this one happened, 😁.

"Stones" is about a 15 minute read. You can read it here: https://clarkesworldmagazine.com/okorafor_09_23/?fbclid=IwAR3b4jyl0Ly6WYwQlpvrPBklW75lsjT3HAbzQhAiYCUG5yQ4vXHPoEd7Bqw 🚀👽👨🏾‍🚀

An extraterrestrial, a Nigerian astronaut from Imo State, the cosmos and freedom.

econoprof,

@nnedi thank you for this!

Any chance that someone will narrate it, for @clarkesworld or another sf short fiction audio publisher? it would be a wonderful listen!

I can relate to “the laws of physics [might] evolve and change over time.” Ok, fine.

But “Different laws might even compete” is, to me, not so easily understood, to put it mildly. Mind boggling territory.

Any stories on that subject that can help?

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/02/opinion/cosmology-crisis-webb-telescope.html

econoprof,

@J12t As a nonphysicist and particularly not a cosmologist, this piece was rather mindblowing. While is/isnot clickbait for science geeks, yet another effort by those authors (see their 2015 piece linked at the bottom of the article) to give the rest of us a readable preview of very serious goings-on and some of the arguments in the field. Similar impact from the sideangle reveal of exoplanet discovery in Sara Seager’s grief memoir.

I go back and forth a lot on duolingo. It's like... great for aerobics and for filling up a spare 10 minutes, but it'd be great if now and then it really made you struggle for a minute.

econoprof,

@ZachWeinersmith By choosing Ukrainian, I’ve had to struggle to learn new alphabet, new grammar patterns, etc. The course is clearly newer and less well-developed than, say, French, which I’m reviewing.The Ukrainian course lacks Stories and longer sentences in the exercises. The recently added guidebooks help. But I’ve bought a pile of workbooks, dictionary, and supplemental texts. Using Lingq and ukrainian podcasts helps. Wish they’d fix the numbers in voice recognition! Dispiriting.
