Hailing from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia, I'm a big time film nerd (with a particular love of David Lynch & 20th century horror), an avid reader of a broad range (but 70s 80s horror and sci-fi paperbacks and political history are my jam) and part-time poet when I'm less stable/more inspired, indie rock geek with a strong Americana twist. I'm ace-leaning and a committed friend of the Trans community, genderqueer he/they, mental health awareness advocate with schizoaffective.

Tonight's movie: Ernest Scared Stupid (1991)

famousblueben,

@KentuckyConjurer Straight up love this movie without a shred of irony in my heart, I grew up on the Ernest movies as a kid and this one was always easily my favorite. You can tell that they were really trying with this one, and a scared Ernest never gets old.

Look, if you put me in front of a Family Dollar DVD section with money in my pocket, the chances are high that I'm going to make a poor financial decision. I couldn't resist, I wanted a collection and thought I'd get way more bad movie entertainment value with this over Poltergeist II and III.

A few weeks back @SanctimoniousNate pointed out to me that Star Wars Episode 1: Racer was on sale for like 5 bucks on Steam. Given how often I played it on the N64 growing up, I couldn't resist picking it up.

I finally gave it a play today and it is a lot easier than I remember but still soo much fun, the tracks are so beautifully designed with branching paths regularly, and you can't forget that wonderful John Williams music scoring each race. Won every race in the tourny.

I think the point at which our culture began to totally derail for the worse is when Jay Leno got The Tonight Show over Letterman. That's a alternate timeline I'd like to see.

Didn't get a chance to comment on it yesterday, but just wanted to say how impressed I was all weekend with Linus Lundqvist.

In practice and qualifying in mixed conditions, he was consistently a bit faster than what those Meyer Shank cars average this year, and he was solidly in the top 13 like all race until his accident, running some of it when pit strat allowed up in the top 10 with usually much faster cars. I really hope it was good enough to lead to more chances.

I managed to spend all morning and early afternoon at the pool without my Scots-Irish paperwhite skin being burnt to a crisp, which is truly a minor miracle even if I refused to leave the shade for like 70% of the time I was there. Usually a summer day outside for me no matter the shade and sunscreen levels leaves me looking like an embarrassed communist lobster.

My dad has developed a killer pickle recipe, a lot of bite from the pronounced profiles of both red and black pepper. It is absolutely easy to devour a jar, so I was thrilled when he brought me these when he came into town.

Whenever anybody complains about cancel culture ruining lives, I just think about the fact that Mel Gibson is fully allowed to direct Oscar recognized films and co-star in fairly mainstream films despite his deep documentation of antisemitism, racism, and abusive behavior towards women.

I love how all video game people seem to absolutely loathe most FMV games from the early 90s and when the ambition was too early for the tech, but if I ever got the chance to design a video game it would absolutely be a 21st century update on the FMV game complete with cheesy acting and writing.

I've been working on lessons on Duolingo lately because I'm fascinated by its prominence and use in early international movements and want to do my best at reclaiming that in a one-person campaign. Not doing, like, great at retention, but trying all the same!

Welcome to all the refugees coming into Mastodon for the first time after these most recent events. I promise you that if you give it time to get the hang of it, you will find a much more friendly, chill, and helpful community than you can find almost anywhere else when it comes to social media. The entire Fediverse as a whole has become a home for me, and I hope it does for you as well.

I'll admit that it took longer into adulthood than I would have liked to get on board with affirmative action. I was a white working class Southerner living in a very conservative suburb in Appalachia, so when people like Jim Webb talked about making it class-based instead of race, I listened.

I was a fucking moron. Now more than ever we need AA & other such programs to maintain a basic fairness in educational opportunities for people of color, it is absolutely vital and to gut that is criminal

"The Boogeyman," an adaptation of Stephen King's 1973 short story of the same name, hits theaters tomorrow. The Hollywood Reporter says it's so well done that even though it's a minor King, it's major scary. But which is the best Stephen King movie adaptation of all time?

@CultureDesk Technically not a "movie", but the Stephen King IT (1990) miniseries is my personal favorite of the adaptations even if the very underrated Tommy Lee Wallace (big Halloween III defender too) doesn't quite live up to the directorial standards of the the 3 listed films.
