Watching Linux distros (and yes, it is usually Debian packagers who act the most sanctimonious) shoot themselves in the face and then insult upstream AND the users of a popular package under the delusion that only the distro's self-declared experts are capable of making decisions is always a good reminder as to why you will never be able to waterboard me into using Linux as my primary desktop. Very sorry this is happening Team KeePassXC. https://fosstodon.org/@keepassxc/112417353193348720

glassresistor,
@glassresistor@sfba.social avatar

@film_girl as a person who this is totally going to effect I dont see the big deal "apt-get install keepassxc-full" and problem solved right?

easier to do that then complain, adding a popup on first upgrade or putting a warning during upgrade could solve that though

glassresistor,
@glassresistor@sfba.social avatar

@film_girl apt-get lets packages print warnings, idk if the guis show this. also a first start flag or a bunch of options

idk which is easiest, also dont no if i think full was better over minimal and debian guy seems like a jerk. originally i thought it was removing plugins not compile flags

just feels pretty small potatoes. like i suspect 50% of apt installing keepassxc people have now been informed

I wonder how hard it is to make my on logitech wireless keyboard.

like, not a keyboard that works wirelessly, that's easy and I've done it already (the cubekeyboard).
but one that works with logitech receivers.

maybe I could buy their cheapest wireless keyboard, destroy it, and then wire my own hardware up to the keyboard matrix?

glassresistor,
@glassresistor@sfba.social avatar

@foone i think they switched from a proprietary RF thing to something closer to bluetooth(but still locked in) when the pop keyboards came out, so it might be 2things now

ive been wondering if going the other way and making a bluetooth dongle thats programmable via software but holds the keys and setting on the dongle and so the OS sees it as a regular usb keyboard, mouse, maybe even headphones

so it can be swapped computer to computer

glassresistor,
@glassresistor@sfba.social avatar

Yemen's Houthis are threatening to cut off the fiber optic cable that runs under the Red Sea if the US and UK strike Yemen's airports again

This cable powers communication channels connecting Europe, Africa and the Middle East. If it is disabled, it will affect geopolitical stability, global financial markets and information security.

By the way, more than 99% of the world's Internet traffic and more than 80% of international communication lines pass through undersea cables.

Maybe everyone’s favourite 90% failure rate statistic in startups is a sign than the startup model is broken?

If a hospital had a 90% failure rate on procedures they’d be shut the fuck down.

If a high school had a 90% failure rate on their final exams, we’d be asking some tough questions.

Why do we celebrate that statistic like a badge of honour in tech?

glassresistor,
@glassresistor@sfba.social avatar

@Daojoan i mean so fuck capitalists but something like 60% of restaurants fail at 3years

startups fail in the 3-6yr range at similar rates and by 8-10yrs it is the 65% stat

for food service its 70%

ipo or acquisition rate, usually after 10yr mark, is is about 10%. what most people quote as success

but generally its as good a bet as "safer" read smaller investments

    If you're mad at EFF for making it possible to use Chrome with less tracking instead of yelling at people to use a different browser, then I assume you have never heard of harm reduction. Giving people digital privacy and security advice means meeting people where they're at. Otherwise, you're just running your mouth to make yourself feel smart.

    i used to have serious issues understanding people on voice/video calls but then i realized that when it's someone i'm close to, we can just introject each other (fully or partially) and then use these models of each other as the most efficient speech/thought compression algorithm that could possibly exist

    glassresistor,

    I'm running through a free Udacity intro to Python course for Reasons and it is clearly out of date. It doesn't specify a version of Python, but refuses to accept dictionaries are ordered.
