Let’s talk about dark mode and accessibility! There’s a myth that dark mode is good for accessibility, because it improves text readability. It's not always true.

@stephaniewalter What a beautiful web site.

(Is it just me on Firefox mobile but does the Other articles... section require a little more padding? Text runs up against the left side of the browser window in a way that it doesn't in the other sections.)

made a blog post about giving my dad a smartphone flashed with lineageOS and everything removed and how it's the perfect "dumb" phone

https://blog.decryption.net.au/t/lineageos-is-the-perfect-minimal-smartphone-for-non-tech-savvy-folk/155

greg,
@greg@aus.social avatar

@decryption Almost exactly what I run but for myself because why would I want a pocket distraction machine harrassing and snatching my attention constantly?

greg,
@greg@aus.social avatar

@decryption Yeah I have some more apps but I get to choose exactly which ones and let me tell you it's not many.

greg,
@greg@aus.social avatar

@decryption Wait so just to confirm... LineageOS on an S10 is going to be okay with VoLTE? I'm having a minor panic that I might have to buy a crappy new phone with no 3.5mm audio port so it can still make calls.

greg,
@greg@aus.social avatar

@decryption I can't remember if I did but that is reassuring that worst case scenario I can reinstall everything and maybe get it working.

Hornsby is the fifth best place to live in Australia, apparently.

At least, according to a study SGS Economics and Planning:

"Sydney's Northern beaches ranks as the highest in the nation for wellbeing, with only one Queensland city making it to the top 10, the annual index revealed today.

"The Australian Capital Territory came in second due to its low gender wage gaps, climate change risks and the division of wealth."

The study assessed 518 local council areas on seven indicators:

  • economy
  • income and wealth
  • employment, knowledge and skills
  • housing
  • health
  • equality, community and work-life balance
  • environment

The top 10 local government areas are:

  1. Northern Beaches (Greater Sydney)

  2. Australian Capital Territory

  3. North Sydney (Greater Sydney)

  4. Ku-ring-gai (Greater Sydney)

  5. Hornsby (Greater Sydney)

  6. Lane Cove (Greater Sydney)

  7. Mosman (Greater Sydney)

  8. Sutherland (Greater Sydney)

  9. Sydney (Greater Sydney)

  10. Brisbane (Greater Brisbane)

We Need To Rewild The Internet

“When we simplify complex systems, we destroy them, and the devastating consequences sometimes aren’t obvious until it’s too late.”

Monocultures and single points of failure are red flags for any ecosystem.

greg,
@greg@aus.social avatar

@vmbrasseur Agree with the sentiment but I find it fun how my ecologist friend hates this article. Rewilding is a fraught concept in ecology. How do you define wild, for example. At what point in history are you using as a reference for native or natural or wild? It has caused an unhelpful dichotomy with humans on one hand and everything else on the other. But humans are animals and are intimately interconnected parts of most (all?) ecosystems on earth, and they need to be diverse and sustainable, so how does wild fit into that as a concept. Or something. I'm probably not doing it justice.

    @GrrlScientist I still can't believe in 2023 people in the global west fly around in planes willy nilly and eat beef and dairy whenever they want and say it's corporations and the richest 10% who have to change their ways, not acknowledging that they ARE the richest 10% and also customers to those corporations.

    My @smh cartoon.

    greg,
    @greg@aus.social avatar

    @cathywilcox This seemed known/obvious at the time too.

    I remember newspapers with one story about proudly stopping asylum seekers and another story right next to it about a huge country wide problem with stolen wages, largely from immigrants who spoke no English. I think there were even articles about the failures of Border Force at the time.

    When I think about their uniforms it reminds me of the characterisation of failed state authoritarians as looters - people who loot the wealth of a country, hollow out all its institutions, make bank and make off.

    @dave I have similar feels about living in Australia in 2023, like decades of neoliberalism has privatised so much that now I am not a citizen, I am a consumer, and engagement in my community or with government services makes me feel targeted and used.

    If private business enshittification is inevitable at some point, and we’ve privatised everything that isn’t bolted down, then…

    Late stage capitalism feels.

    chu, (edited ) to climate

    In conversation w a friend, she was surprised when I said we won't have electricity after social collapse. She asked "why? What happens to electricity?"

    I had to then explain that infrastructure needs people to maintain and if things fall apart, nobody will keep the generators going or the wires in check. She seemed surprised by this.

    Is this why people don't seem worried about what's coming? They have no idea???

    I was trying to hide my shock that I had to explain this to someone who isn't a child. I think I take too much for granted and assume too much of people's ability to be logical.

    Now her obsession with social issues at the expense of makes sense. I was always wondering how someone on the left would not care about collapse. I have tried to explain before that as much as I share her concerns about the many dire issues that do need dealing with, none of it matters if climate change causes collapse. Then we won't have social housing, or equity, or any of the other things she cares about. (she was even part of a group that protested demanding "affordable gas")

    Her look of shock finally helped me realize that she has absolutely no idea what means. No idea. I've been arguing with her all these years and she's had no idea.

    I don't even know what to say.

    There's no way she's the only one. Lots of well intentioned people say "yes climate is important but....".

    I am here to tell you that none of those other issues will even exist in the face of climate and social collapse.

    I don't know if the average person can even imagine the number of deaths that we are facing when the society we built loses electricity.
