I am EXTREMELY disappointed by Kathleen Ganley's team's recent attack on a yet-to-announce candidate. It's a clear sign that Ms Ganley lacks genuine leadership qualities.
Leadership is about rising above, not undermining others to self-promote. Her choice to include a column from Rick Bell, (EWW?) further questions her judgment.
Let's demand better leadership and I encourage everyone to reconsider your support for Team Ganley & her endorsers.

And we need to vote accordingly.

Hey fellow Mastolorians,
I'm watching the most Canadian version ever of Handel's Messiah: from every province and territory, in multiple languages including Inuktitut, Dene, and Southern Tutchone! It's free or pay-what-you-can (click on the Home button to get your ticket to watch)

A lovely way to spend Christmas Eve.

:mstdn: MSTDN.CA needs your help! :mstdnca:

It's run by volunteers, but the computers that run it are pay-per-use on the cloud. They're running out of money.

Can you donate $10 a month to keep it going? $5 a month?

Maybe up your current monthly donation? I just upped mine to $7/Mth.

Go to HTTPS://mstdn.ca/about to donate now, please. :mapleleaf:

Wow.

The Washington Post is reporting that an Indian government employee hired a hit man for $100,000 and ordered him to go ahead with the murder of a Sikh separatist in the U.S. one day after Hardeep Singh Nijjar was assassinated in Canada, "as both Sikhs were on the same list of targets."

The hit man was an undercover FBI agent.

The CIA Director and Director of National Intelligence later flew to India to demand an investigation.

Zero electric bills can be a reality in your city. Donโ€™t be misled by the gimmick of a zero fossil fuel electricity bill, and donโ€™t tolerate overpriced fossil fuel electricity. In both cases, the fossil fuel industry profits, either through subsidies or price gouging.

Most mainstream Canadian media is problematic in their coverage of what's happening to Gaza, but Bell Media even has its own chant at actionsยน.

๐Ÿ“ฃ CTV don't you lie
๐Ÿ“ฃ Genocide is a crime.

From the @TheBreach article:

โ
In an Oct. 10 directive telling employees how to write about the violence, CTV told them not to use the word โ€œPalestineโ€ and made the politically-charged assertion that โ€œPalestineโ€ฆdoes not currently exist.โ€

The email, sent to journalists across the media conglomerate, stated that all Bell Media platforms should use the same language.

โ€œGiven radically conflicting viewpoints and the sensitive nature of the current situation in the Middle East, this note is not to be circulated externally,โ€ the email from CTV News assignment editor Mark Khouzam stated.
โž

It's always mystified me how large corporations think they can keep documents they send out to hundreds of people from being leaked, unless EVERYBODY they're sending it to agrees.

It's easier for military orgs to do this with a stronger implicit threat.

ยน https://kolektiva.social/@Gigi/111258208529784308

The Breach verified the directive's authenticity with several employees at Bell Media. One journalist at Bell Media told The Breach they found the guidance biased. "The neutral thing to say would have been: 'We don't use Palestine in our copy because Canada does not recognize Palestine as a state. That's a fact," the journalist said. "Palestine does not exist, is a strong opinion."
In 2021, CBC News was criticized for sending out a similar directive. CBC News Toronto told staff the broadcaster doesn't use the word "Palestine" because "there is no modern country of Palestine," and told them to not use the word in rough drafts or "colloquially in our own exchanges." At least one headline this month on CTV News that initially used the word "Palestine" was later edited to remove it.
Senior editorial staff have also openly disparaged Palestinian guests and questioned whether their perspectives are newsworthy, the journalist said. Palestinian guests, according to the journalist, are expected to express grief but not political opinions or context about their experiences. "When it comes to Palestinian guests... they're essentially brought on to cry," the journalist said. "That's all they're good for."

Another classic, incisive post from @mmasnick Re: Elonโ€™s supposed thermonuclear lawsuit against Media Matters:

โ€œSoโ€ฆ within the span of about 2 to 3 pages we are told that Elon Musk and exTwitter are passionate supporters of free speech that allow โ€œall viewpointsโ€ to be shared and that Musk is filing this lawsuit to force Media Matters to take down speech that he admits is absolutely true, but where he doesnโ€™t like how they portrayed things.โ€

I can see how Media Matters got under Elon's skin:

"Xโ€™s ad targeting tool is apparently a piece of garbage that companies canโ€™t count on to keep their advertisements from appearing alongside Holocaust denial, pro-Hitler content, and other bigotry.... The โ€œroot cause of X having antisemitic content next to Adsโ€ is that thereโ€™s a ton of pro-Hitler, Holocaust denial, white nationalist, and neo-Nazi content on X for the ads to appear alongside."

While I personally stopped tweeting in May, it was clear that now was the time for Flipboard to stop tweeting as well.

This is a sad outcome given that Twitter was the platform we got started on in 2010 and I was a board member there with Jack, Ev and Dick. But that Twitter is gone now. And the future is the open social web.

By the way - very very pleased to tell you that I've just lined up two of the smartest guys in town, Andrew Leach, professor of energy economics and Eric Adams, professor of constitutional law, for a special "breaking news" edition of my Alberta Unbound podcast, on Supreme Court ruling on Bill C-69. We will record it Sunday morning - and hope to release it by Monday afternoon. Stay tuned.
